“Nunez’s record of building a complete athletic program, one that won big in a number of sports at New Mexico, and his long run (14 years) at Power 5 SEC LSU helped push him over the top. Nunez, a former basketball player at the University of Florida under Billy Donovan who hired [Richard Pinto] at New Mexico, connected with UH basketball coach [Kelvin Sampson] as well, according to sources close to the search”
“When Eddie Nunez first took the University of New Mexico athletic director job seven years ago, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey singled Nunez out as a rising star in the industry. Now Nunez takes over a Power 5 program in the fourth largest city in the United States.
Nunez does it having built a culture of winning at New Mexico across the board, including success in a number of women’s sports, with the Lobos having won a national championship (in women’s cross country), captured 22 conference titles and made 53 NCAA Tournament appearances during his run in Albuquerque. Nunez balances that with major fundraising skills, having help drive $400 million in facility renovations and construction projects at LSU. He also worked out a 10-year multi-media rights agreement with Outfront Media Sports for LSU athletics”
I just hope we truly selected the best candidate. I hope he brings some outside the box ideas to raise money and builds this program up. Let’s support and welcome AD Nunez! Go Coogs
This is so funny. How could “So many people are upset about this hire” when it just happened. I imagine the someone would be unhappy regardless of who was hired.
Since that’s who Khator and Fertitta selected, I’m all in on supporting him. Hope he has great results and can transform our fundraising and sponsorships into a national juggernaut.
I will give 2 thoughts on your comments. First thought is I would caution you on assessing him only on his University of New Mexico track record. Please look at his total track record. Second thought is I am aware of what he walked into at New Mexico. In this part of the country, he is viewed very favorably regarding his accomplishments at New Mexico to include Building a staff.
I think we can all agree that he must consider replacing some coaches here.
