All together now, lets “b*tch” . . . . .
Exactly! If this poor soul wants to truly be successful in this job, all he has to do is refer to this board 3 times a day for total guidance and “understanding”. We’s got it covered, from how to park, what to wear, toothpaste or not, brass knucks for our team, visitors room on the Gulf Fwy, etc.etc.
And Coastal Carolina is on the college football G5 map…
The Lobos?
UH is a very difficult job wirh a unique set of challenges.
Hope he is the guy.
You have to enter this job giving it your ALL from DAY ONE…coaches and ADs that take the slow “rebuild” approach WILL fail here.
Not how CoogFans works.
I have been critical of some of the past hires, especially some football coaches. I do like Fritz. At least they realized Pezman was a mistake. Between the last two candidates, I had mixed feeling about which one. I remember when we hired Bill Carr as AD, who was a sports agent. At least Nunez has been an AD. He does have Sampson’s support. If he doesn’t work out, I don’t think they will wait very long to make a change. We don’t have that luxury. The new AD has to be a great fundraiser. We will find out very quickly how good he is. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt for right now.
Alpert would’ve been an awesome hire but i wonder if his age (36) worked against him according to Tilly & Khantor. You can tell he is very ambitious and thinks big when taking over an athletics program.
We need someone that has a 100 day plan and is willing to be shot out of a Canon they second we say ‘Go’.
This is NOT the type of a job for those life/work balance candidates that think 40 hours is acceptable.
Ask Dana how that works out and now consider the AD is in charge of the WHOLE athletic department plus oversees many adjacent departments.
So…what has Nunez done Today…day ONE on the clock?
Are you sure it was us that passed?
Alpert’s entertainment district around Neyland Stadium certainly fueled everyone’s imagination that Alpert could build a Disneyland-like entertainment district around TDECU (just kidding on the last part), but truthfully, that may not be a realistic objective for UH and Dr. Khator would know that immediately.
Nunez has been top dog in an athletic department, which don’t let anyone convince you otherwise, is different then being second on command. With the fundraiser and ticket person also hired, we have the heads in place to implement change. Now let’s let them get to work.
I’m going to give our admin the benefit of the doubt on the hire.
I think there are a lot of question marks if we got the best candidate but maybe a deal couldn’t be reached or there was something in a background check that didn’t pan out or maybe Nunez was just the best candidate that was interested.
If we weren’t directly involved, it’s hard to say.
It’s clear to me Nunez wasn’t our top choice. That doesn’t mean he won’t be successful.
He’s our guy now and I’m definitely hoping for success.
I have one question.
What exactly would an “outside the box” hire look like?
I mean, I’m just trying to visualize it.
The guy from the Texans would have qualified. I think people were looking for someone outside of an athletic department (which is who generally gets hired).
I think there is a reason it took so long. Either there was a problem in Alpert’s background or he decided to wait for another position.
I always took it to mean someone outside the traditional athletic department structure. An executive in media or advertising that intersected college sports.
Think we are saying the same thing.
Yoramark is the perfect example.
Others that were thrown around were .
The president of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, i forgot her name
Jeff Luhnow who was an outside the box candidate before he entered baseball
Reid Ryan would have been another one
Basically, candidates that posess transferable skills to tackle the demands of the modern AD role in addition to the basicduties.
Those would include NIL, matketing, fundraising, brand awareness, paying players, etc.)
I really hope Nunez WOWED our leaders with a strategic 100 day plan to set the tone of his administration
If Sampson, Fritz, Khator and Fertitta are on board with the hire then so am I. Go Coogs!
I suppose that there could br something to be said for that, but there would also be some pretty obvious risks.
Do you really want to hire someone with no experience in college athletics in such an important college athletics position?
Someone with little to know knowledge of all of the peculiarities of college sports as opposed to other sports and entertainment forms?
I dunno!
There could be pros and cons to that!
Anyway, Renu apparently aims to double our athletic budget under the new AD with corporate help.
Read on.
I always think of this kind of talk as aspirational, but it is better than aiming low.
