True about the bb with the sec grabbing a ton of at large spots but it’s why I at least want 2 auto bids for the big12 in football. If we went the fairer route of conf champs then the rest at large, the sec and big would grab most of the at large spots so we might as well guarantee 2 big 12 auto bids which is the better outcome for us.
It all started 30 years ago with the schools taking charge of the Bowl Championship Series and schools moving into different conferences. The long play has been to eliminate the NCAA and take over March Madness
I think it would wise to cause the fight now for that reason.
They don’t have March Madness locked down yet. In a few years you might lose that.
Tell them no and get a good TV partner who always refers to them as “the minor leagues” and calls them a pro league and the remaining schools as college football.
With what happened with the cfp today and more than likely in 2026 it is time to make sure the p2’s do not take control of March Madness. The question is how? How can the p2 be stopped from taking it over? Law firms specializing in the sports/media industry must be licking their chops tonight.
So what? If Tech takes care of their business like they should have, it would have been an all Big 12 NC game in BB. We got 8 bids and we were well represented. Get in and WIN! Quit worrying about who else gets in. Our league will always be in there fighting…
The title needs to be changed to Power 2
That is not the point Monte. 14 sec bids should have never happened.
Look at:
okie bounced by uconn
miss state 8 seed beaten by baylor 9 seed
georgia 9 seed hammered by gonzaga 8 seed
At least the three above should have not made March Madness.
No, it started in the mid 80s with the tv deals.
The NCAA should have never had control over tv moneys and distribution. They should strictly be a regulatory body that sets and enforces the rules the conferences, schools, and student athletes should play by. The conference situations, student athlete designation, and tv moneys should be governed from rules set up by Congress and enforced by separate committees. The NCAA should NEVER have had control over TV money’s, rather their operation should be run with fees paid to the NCAA per school based on total sport revenues, number of teams, and athletes the NCAA has to support and monitor per school. For example, football would be responsible for the bulk of those fees (not they pay ZERO which is ridiculous) as football brings in the most money AND requires the most athlete oversight (most scholarship athletes). That’s a rough explanation but you get the idea.
The fact is conference commissioners run their conference as a business and have really only made decisions to maximize revenues. IMO, as a non-profit with a different original focus, college athletics should NEVER been about maximizing profits, revenues, and dollars. It should have always been about maintaining a healthy eco-system for the student athletes and ensuring longevity and opportunity for the programs that are supported. Making it about money transfixed the focus and power to two (really one) sports, led to ridiculous realignments that were only about money, and has created infinitely more problems than it solves.
Maybe most important in all of this, is it’s not longer about providing opportunities to students. Instead, it’s all about using the sports to maximize monetary benefit. Money is really the only thing that matters now (and winning only matters as it brings in more money).
In terms of the current situation, the most important factor for determining or gauging conference strength is non-conference opposition, which is extremely lacking across all sports leagues. Once a conference gets through the non-conference slate with a good record/higher ranking, the insular strength of schedule remains intact and cannot be significantly altered. The only exception is when a really bad team unexpectedly beats a really good one, which rarely (but occasionally) happens. Even then, a singular upset isn’t going to move the needle much. In the case of the SEC, and to a lesser extent the Big 10, they are perpetually overrated in the preseason, as there is not only a large media controlled incentive to do so, but they also have a greater footprint of coverage and inherent bias.
Everything about this deal is BS. I think the Big 12 and ACC should have told them to pound sand as it brings everything close to the inevitable, P2 power grab anyway. I’d take my chances on having a large portion of the nation follow, assuming the Big 12 and ACC set up something fair and is all-inclusive. I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I think the Big 10 and SEC are about to alienate a lot of football fans.
The NCAA committee always has set up the bids and they work real hard doing it. Conference champs from all over the country get their shot, along with lots of other teams. Because the SEC got a lot of bids doesnt mean they are “taking over” the tournament. A big reason viewership is as good as it is, is because people love to watch the underdogs win games and spring big upsets in those first 2 rounds. They arent breaking away and forming their own tournament, because they arent stupid. I dont think you could EVER get the BIG to go along with breaking away anyway…What is SEC going to do? PLAY themselves? People on this board need to relax…
