BREAKING: Power 4 propose taking over national championship tourneys

Proposal by Power 4 seeks more control over college sports governance, including postseason events.

Quote: The proposal would “grant the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC rights to manage postseason championships,” such as the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, “assuming control over events that have long been operated” by the NCAA. The proposal is described only as a “working document” and is “not a complete or approved product.” But it indicates a “clear direction” from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC, which “want an expansion of their previously existing autonomous legislative powers." SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey cautioned that the proposal is “only a conversation-starter as all of Division I leaders examine a new governance model.” Dellenger notes the proposal would “create a new subdivision within the NCAA umbrella.” But Sankey and other commissioners said that it does “not signal the long-discussed breakaway from the national association,” as there “remains a commitment to continue to grant broad access to postseason events.”

I’ve seen similar reporting on Yahoo and AP.

We knew this day would come, glad to see Big12 making the cut, 100% hoops and arizona st

I trust the SEC less than I do a used car salesman. Pure slime.

All the articles that come up for this in Google are from mostly January. Doesn’t feel, “breaking”

Ah Hell.

It just hit my news feed today!

Guess I’m behind!

Seems like they already have P2 control

It largely looks that way.

EXCEPT…

No SEC team made the football title game for the second straight year, and they were one botched targeting call away from not even getting a team in this year’s football Final Four…AND

One of the teams that played for the men’s basketball title wasn’t P2.

So it’s ‘P4’ until SEC and BIG decide it is P2. That’s the existential threat to the Big12. Is there any way to play our hand other than play nice until we get kicked to the curb? Seems to me moves like this with our support are going to help solidify BIG/SEC shot calling power ultimately. No reason to be confident we are not going take a bullet from them at some point.

As I’ve said before.

The only reason I don’t see it happening is because the content providers need more than just the teams in the P2 to fill all the available TV slots.

That said, if there were a way around that, I think that everyone would be powerless to stop it.

I think it’s going to stay P4 legislatively, but the P2 is going to create rules where they garner more and more of post-season revenue.

Look at what the P2 is trying to do in football, but the Big 12 and ACC are supposed to be equal partners in the P4.

Terrible idea.

There needs to be an independent oversight body, one better than the NCAA that sets up, controls, and manages tourneys. Then there should be a separate entity/branch that manages rules, oversight, and enforcment. Its mindboggling how football, the biggest money maker, the sport with the most scholarships, and arguably (or not) the sport that has consistently had the worst rules infractions DID NOT help fund the very organization that had to spend millions overseeing it.

Organizational oversight fees should be determined by the amount of work (players and organizational personal) and manpower required to oversee it, as well as money generated for that sport. Football has unfairly had advantages over basketball for years in this regard, as the NCAA tourney funded the entire organization.

But leaving control to the conferences, who largely crested the mess we are in, is a BAD idea. The SEC and Big Ten will further manipulate the system for their benefit, then go off on their own altogether once theyvr used the others to perfect the “system”.

Big no to this.

No surprise, its a long time coming. BB likely to stay much the way it is now…Curious to see how the power 4 will do the FB tournament…P4 only, along with ND? and how will that be determined? I think P4 will create some kind of committee with reps from all the power conferences to decide how to do it.

Made the cut for now… maybe not in the next go round. Big 2 wants support and numbers now, but not when the money is split up.

Not sure that would be even reps. The SEC and B1G already demand more representation in any new 14/16 team playoff. Why give equal rep to the ACC and Big 12 in governance.

aint gonna happen the power 2 aint sharing their stranglehold they got going.

My memory is short!
