Mentioning you are czecho-slovak reminded me of how czechoslovakia broke their country up peacefully to create the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It was a surprise to me but seeing how Yugoslavia has split up and the fights taking place there, I guess it’s human nature. Considering that there are people in the USA who would like to separate our country based upon political ideology we may be looking at that through a barrel of a gun at some point in time. Who’d of thunk it?
Wife’s maiden name was Michalk. Had quite a few relatives through-out that area. Many were Lutheran and ended up in Houston as generations left farming to take up trades in the big city.
Knew a Michalk from Giddings … the painted churches tour (Schulenburg/Weimar area) is very interesting and some of those churches have festivals. A small group of Wendish (small sect of German Lutherans with their own dialect) settled in the New Ulm/Industry area.
Wife’s family name is Chovanetz….Mostly Hallettsville area….many in Ft.Bend area now but solid core stayed in the ville….Some of them extras in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, used courthouse there for filming.
I like eating at Los Cabos in Hallettsville. Nice community.
I never mind heading to the in-laws….as far as small towns go Hallettsville is a nice one.
The courthouse at Christmas is a nice photo op if you are near the area from after Thanksgiving to New Year’s.
My Aunt , Uncle and assorted cousins live in Giddings. Aunt is on Dime Box road . One cousin was Sheriff .
Go Coogs !
Can’t we get some Irish into this conversation?
Well, I suppose we could talk about Irish whiskey or a white Russian (drink).
Here’s some Irish. Family landed in 1654 in New Haven, Connecticut. I suppose most of the Irish landed over the next 150 years, but I doubt very few landed in Texas.
We were here in Texas early on.
I will say this about the Czechs, they have us Irish beaten all to hell in the food department.
I have some Irish…… Mom’s maiden name was Gee.
Worked in rose fields in the Tyler and Lindale area.
My Irish ancestors landed in northern Virginia in the mid 1700’s. Most migrated to Georgia and became sharecroppers. Wisely, by the 1840’s, they made it to East Texas, where they became farmers and ranchers.
Beer too !
Stout v Pilsner.
Yes, Tommy was on the team and was a fraternity brother also. He ended up coaching in Weimar for a while.
Irish potatoes make great bratkartoffeln!!!
You guys looking for reparations?
I’m not looking for anything. Just some stating history.
Yes they do make great bratkartoffein.
The Irish do the whole poetry and music thing really well. The food thing…ughh…no.
