i think you are selling grimes short on his offensive ability… walker didnt defend guards in college… but you think he is shutting down grimes, an all-america
you are saying grimes strength is being shut down by something jarace didnt even do. you are the one underselling
here is a clip of Boise trying to defend grimes with 6’9 wings
straight up, starting far beyond the 3pt line (where he’d have to guard him cause grimes has range)… jarace couldnt guard him in iso
… and even worse, i 100% dont think jarace could guard him for a full game when you add the context of screens
what dooes post blocks have to do with defending on the perimeter?? theres not 1 play of him in the clips having to stick with a shoooter for extended periods of time… which is the who point of the convo
I just watched the second clip, and it reinforced my point. He was isolated with a true guard only once in that entire clip. The guard blew by him with ease, then slowed down for the layup, where Walker recovered to block from behind.
What???
This is a horrendous take. J-Walk was a freshman, and Grimes was a junior. You draft based on potential. There’s a reason Grimes was an All-American and Player of the Year, and Walker wasn’t even First Team All-AAC.
If you are setting this precedent of using draft position to define quality, I’ll use it against Sharp in any debate next year. You know this is a bad argument.
Rewatch the clip you just posted about defense and pay attention to the details. Notice how Jarace ran away from defending guards. Notice how he regularly avoided true switches. Anytime he was switched onto a guard, instead of sticking with the switch, he ran back to the post player, and the guard would switch back.
Also, notice how he never tried to fight through picks. If a pick came, he would fall back.
Jarace has some agility, so maybe he could hold his own for one or two plays. But to suggest he could defend Grimes on the perimeter for a full game is insane. When Jarace was a freshman, Grimes could easily find open threes or mid-range shots in isolation. There’s no chance Jarace could defend him effectively through screens either.
Give Grimes credit. you think very little of our all-American
Let me put it in terms you might understand. We agree that Francis is an elite defender, but we recognize it’s post defense. If I said Francis could shut down Sharp, that would be just as ridiculous as this take.
Of course the guard switches back… that’s the Monster… you trap high and then rotate back if you don’t cause a turnover… he defended multiple drivers on the perimeter and so what if he has to recover sometimes… he has the capability to do it…
Like I said… who’s shutting down JWalk from Line-up A…?
jwalk did 10 a game … only shot open 3s, and on the recieving end of drive and dish … and on the receiving end of drive and dishes … once every 3 or 4 games he’d go an extreme fancy off the dribble fade away midrange, but it wasnt often, or regular
remember both teams are playing the monster… we specialize in stopping the drive and dish… that 60% of his points, and grimes can guard the open 3s… even if he pulls the off the dribble fade way, at most 2 to 4 points … jarace is at most scoring 8
we are talking junior all american grimes vs freshman jarace… why do you think this would be close
stop just watching just highlights… jarace went off the dribble, but only like once every 2 or 3 games …jarace “rarely” created his own shot…
ps im talking off the dribble from self creation, from the perimeter… in some drive and dish to jarace … it would be a short roll, meaning jarace would get it midrange, would need 2 or 3 dribble to get to the post … im not counting that as creating your own shoot

Tugler
some awards were boosted by better teams… or our program just getting more respect now… exact same grimes stats with todays program respect is top 3 NPOY votings… or milos likely only needs 14&6 to be an all-american next year
Tugler, Milos and sharp can likely really jump on the list…
tugler minutes is the only reason he isnt higher as is… tugler on 29mins playing exactly how he did last year is probably #5… but its hard to say a top 5 player for us, but only played 20 mins per
tugler can get to Goat (#1) for me, on 12pts per and 29 mins a game (his defense is that good), milos/sharp assuming no title --milos can get to #3, or sharp to #5 under shead if they take a jump in production …any star player on the title team is #1
