C.F. Kendall - A Great Cougar Legend Has Passed

For like a dozen years, every Fourth of July weekend, my Mom & Dad, CF and Dorothy, Guy & Dina Lewis, and Marianne & Bobby Howard would choose a different border town to “pick on”…
They would caravan down there, play golf, party over the border, and sleep all morning. Everyone met around the pool the next day, no calling to the room allowed…
Good Times…

• CFK & I were ΣΝ frat bros—about 20 years between us. He was a lifelong positive influence on the ΣΝs. Always soft-spoken but you knew you were talking to someone with a razor-sharp mind. He shared many stories with us. Here’s a couple I remember.

• One morning (probably in the 60s) he got a phone call from UH telling him to “Come get your Pledges”. They were abandoned late one night on the West End of Galveston as part of fraternity hazing which was allowed back then. Might have been no wallets, no cash or coins, no shirts, each man gets one shoe or sneaker, and somebody gets one bent dime (pay phone calls were 10 cents). They were picked up by Galveston cops and returned to the frat house at 5018 Calhoun. CFK said one of the newspapers sent a photographer and it made the paper but I don’t know how to search archives for the photo. Would love to have it—If anyone has any tips on how to search for it, plz let me know.

• ΣΝ was shut down in ’07 after an investigation of hazing allegations. By then, hazing was (& is) a felony. CFK was big-time instrumental in helping ΣΝ through that mess. (We re-opened in ’11.)

CF was a problem solver extraordinaire…
Plenty of guys are attorneys. CF was a “lawyer”…able to navigate almost any kind of problem, legal or otherwise.

You all had great TGIF"s in the early 70’s.

And the late 60’s. Great rotation among the different houses….hardly ever a dead Friday afternoon. Lots of Saturday dates made by many late Friday afternoon. :sunglasses:

Kendall, what is your Father’s first name? My memory not what it used to be. Your post jogged what little of it that is left. Mostly remember first names only. Was fortunate to tag along on several vacations down at the Padre Island Hilton, Bahia Mar, and other hotels with that group. Was still a pup but my goal was to be as vigorous as those “old guys”. They were brutal on the tennis court…competitive as all get out. Fun times.

My dad was Arthur (Art) and my mom was Patricia (Pat)…super close friends of CF and Dorothy. Dad was really involved in the Taxi Squad, Cougar Cagers, etc…

Thanks….I remember your Dad now. Good man! It was such a great experience to listen to that group spin tales and just enjoy each other’s friendship. Learned a lot about UH in particular and how to enjoy life in general.
