Can we have a frank conversation about recruiting

Kansas might have recruited worse than us according to the ratings, but anyone who watched that game knows we were out athleted.

If we played them 10 times they would beat us 8 times.

We have to wake up. This thought process that we aren’t recruiting badly because look at all the transfers is a bunch of bean dip.

Dana was asked directly which was more important, the playcalling or motivating the players and he said it was motivation. Hard to believe the former offensive genius is no longer interested in Xs and Os but it appears so

That was schemes. We got outcoached yesterday.
Do you really believe Kansas has more talent than Tech.

I dont think Tech us all that good.

We just aren’t any good at all.

Kansas doesn’t have a bunch 5 stars. They will win games but teams will beat them this year. Containing that QB is not impossible

This year, yes they probably do have more talent than Tortillaville. However, that doesn’t negate your statement that we we’re out coached

They made the most out of the talent they have. They look better than Tech but not because of star rankings

Suggesting we need more talent to win is a lame excuse for losing. Look no further than TAMU as an example of a team that sucks but has some of the best talent in country.

Look, we had success in the past because of the offensive scheme with a few talented skill players. Dual threat QB’s that can run and make plays. Plays that get the ball in the hands of fast skilled players that can make big plays in open space. That’s how we won with less talent in the past. Those teams were exciting to watch.

With Dana, the offense doesn’t get anymore predictable. This leads to the QB getting sacked and and the RB’s getting stuffed at the LOS. That’s not a recipe for success, and it sure as hell won’t cut it in the B12.

Why don’t we strike down field more. I’d say roll tune out more vs drop back to buy time.

I honestly think Dana looks at Clayton as a pro set QB playing in front of an AR Oline. Our Oline is miserable vs a straight up rush from large DTs and LBs. They look better when CT is shot-gunning and Campbell is back absorbing the first LB at the LOS. They can give him 2-3 seconds on a short crossing pattern but after that he’s out of the pocket and passing or running. He had pretty good athletes coming at him all day yesterday. Versus Tech and Utsa he had some more time but they were dropping their LBs back trying to shut out the middle. Face it. When your Oline is at the mercy of the defense you’re gonna have trouble. Add to that they struggle pushing people forward. Its a fire alarm about 60% of the time back there. Henry and Campbell are gonna need Workman’s Comp by mid-season. Can we do an NI L for that?

We have to find a ton of 3-star guys with great potential and develop them for 2-3 years before we can count on them for 1-2 years as difference makers. This is what teams like UH, Tech, Kansas and UTSA have to do to be successful long-term.

If and when we get a super-talented transfer to come in and help for 2+ years, we need to make sure they understand and fit into the culture we’re trying to build.

We can be competitive in the Big 12, but our overall development (position coaches and strength staff) has to be upgraded. I wonder if this is where we will see the most turnover. Holgorsen seems like a loyal guy, so I’d guess he doesn’t want to fire his buddies, but his bosses might force the issue if things go off the tracks for the rest of this season.

True, concern here is the pro set QB is scared, when he sees those large DT and show pressure. Was actually passing by a Kansas fan who proceeded to shout “pick 6” before took Tune took the snap and proceeded to throw that pick.

Tune still holds the ball too long and has happy feet in the pocket. It wasn’t as bad because we were running the ball much better but the run game has been hit or miss and mostly miss so far this year.

Word is that when the Manning kid visited UT, there were 10 recruits in that weekend.

UT spent $290K showing them a good time.

You figure 20 hotel rooms (one for each kid and one for their parents) for 2 nights at the Four Seasons is about $30K. Then meals for 100 (recruits, families, coaches, wives, player hosts, recruiting hostesses) over 2 days at $100 per meal is $60K.

That leaves $200K for “entertainment.” It’s only going to get worse from here…

TOP25, from my vantage point, Tune doesn’t have time to dance around in the pocket to find WRs down field. This is where the predictable play calling hampers the offense. It allows the defense to tee off on the QB. And when the o-line is having trouble blocking, it’s better to have a quick three-step drop passes using short to intermediate routes to get the ball in the hands of the skilled players to make big plays. That’s how we were so successful in the past despite not having a team loaded with talent.

Everything in the OP is spot on. However, it’s not just the Jimmys and Joes but the Xs and Os as well. When you put what we’ve got together, we are going to be dead last in the Big 12. We will probably leave Holgi and make some coaching changes, which will probably amount to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. It is what it is. Last year gave us false hope. The future is clear, and we will probably make a head coach change after finishing last in the Big 12 once or twice.

Les Miles recruits.
