Yeah, 3K hits is a given…UNLESS (Rafael Palmeiro) there are PEDs involved.
PEDs seem to be the ONE and ONLY “zero tolerance” cheat.
300 wins by a pitcher likewise automatically gets you in as a cheater (Perry and Sutton), UNLESS the cheat is PEDs (Clemens).
We need to make sure we keep Altuve long enough to get him to 3K hits.
That, combined with no PED allegations, should be enough.

For irrational and illogical blame for Altuve not admitting he was part of it (even though he wasn’t). I don’t expect rationality or logic from the sports writers that vote on that stuff just based on past history.
I mean, like why was Guy V. Lewis kept out of the Hall of Fame for so long? It wasn’t rational.
The Hall supposedly has the final say in what team cap is represented on the HOF plaque. Greg Maddux ended up with a blank cap since his MLB service was spent almost evenly between the Braves and Cubs even though most of us would remember him as a Brave.
3000 hits is great but partly an indicator of availability and health. If you were to look at every hitter who has 3000 hits and evaluate their final 2-3 seasons, I bet the majority were sub 100 OPS+ hitters in those years.
Oh yeah, but as I said, for the HOF voters, it appears that certain types of cheating won’t keep you out, and others will.
Throwing spitballs and greaseballs won’t keep you out (Gaylord Perry).
Scuffing the ball won’t keep you out (Don Sutton),
Sign stealing won’t keep you out (Beltran).
But PEDs…that will keep home run kings, 300+ win pitchers, and 3000 hit batters out of the HOF.
PED use seems to be the one, over the top, unforgivable “cheat.”
Even gambling and game fixing may not keep you out; we’ll see what happens with Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson; it appears they may get another shot.

Clear logic and rationality does escape the hall of fame voters.
