I was driving home after the game and CBS sports said there were two games where the refs almost became the story.
Army v St Johns. They let them play old school the first half and the second half was a free throw contest between two bad free throw teams. They described it as unwatchable. And if Putin had not kept out his best player the last 4 min for poor play, the refs would have been the story.
UH v Gonzaga. Same story. Almost no calls, physical play in the first half. Then the second half they called tons of fouls that they did not call in the first half. Pointed out the flagrant on Tugler was a terrible call. And the 14-14 from the line kept Gonzaga in the game.
Before the game started I told a buddy I hope they don’t let physical play in the first and then shut it down in the second. It is harder to adapt for the physical team and you end up double bonus and close to fouling out players. But that is how it was called.
I might as well post my take here. One rule I’d like to see changed is the continuation, or lack of, at the college level. I’ve never understood why that’s not allowed.
Yep, Gonzaga is a good FT shooting team. I had the same concern about the refs turning the game into a FT shooting contest. Thankfully we hit enough FTs and big shots to get the W, but the two halves were definitely called differently.
It seems every game there are lots of traveling, carrying and double dribbles not called.
I heard someone say the refs intentionally overlook carrying if it is not done for advantage, like when bringing the ball up the court while not under pressure for example
The only issue I had with the calls was that flagrant call on Tugler. That was actually a huge call and changed the game. Otherwise, Coogs would have kept the score under control. That flagrant cost us 4 pts.
Should’ve been a flagrant based on stupidity. Pointless foul that killed all the momentum we were building. Could’ve been as much as an 8 point swing.
I’m not denying it was a foul. That was a flagrant, meaning that they got 2 free throws and got the ball back, scored, which shifted the momentum of the game.
You are right but Tugler has to learn not to put himself in those situations. We had the team beat, so why would we allow the referees to dictate the game? He needs to grow up quickly if we are going to win the upcoming games.
