CFP may withhold playoff revenue from SMU!

Despite all that vaunted NIL money…their current recruiting class…with a WHOLE SEASON to recruit is BEHIND UH, which had only the last few weeks to recruit.

Speaks volumes.

I agree with CDH that actually being in the conference matters quite a bit. UH is a year ahead. How was UH recruiting in 2023?

The whole $100M doesn’t get spent in one year. Maybe it’s a fund to cover the media rights shortfall.

so…they have ONE more In Conference Blue Blood home football game than we will have next year or for the foreseeable future.

we got a HUGE bump in recruiting when we received the invitation to the Big East (then a BCS Power Conference).

Remember the marquee advertisement in times Square?

We also had a coach that hustled with recruiting (Levine).

CDH…not so much.

And SMU will STILL have lower average attendance than UH.

PRINT IT!!!

Come on, Law.

SMU is a solid private school filled with upper class kids. Of course they’re going to want to be associated with Boston College, Syracuse, Pitt, Duke, Virginia, Wake, etc… more than UTSA, FAU, Charlotte, UNT, UAB etc…

I guarantee you they’ll average several thousand more per game next year.

Being associated with is one thing.

Attending the football games is quite another.

Those aren’t the kind of football brands that generate fan interest and draw crowds.

I can see Florida State next season drawing a big crowd, but none of the others. Those other ACC teams will likely draw less than most Big 12 opponents would have.

There’s a REASON Florida State has filed a lawsuit to leave teams like that behind. They hold them back as a program, cost them a spot in the playoffs, and also cost them media money (FSU will now be earning less from TV than UCF).

I said it before and I’ll say it again… SUCK IT SMOO!!!

Is this just a pro-rata thing, whereby SMU only gets a share of CFP based on their share of ACC? Apologies if already covered.

Smooo just bribed themselves into a situation that pays less than the current situation there leaving. They just bribed themselves into a AAC 3.0 version (once the conference implodes) but it’s called the ACC.

They kicked the can down the road.

Here’s a chart that spells out the ACC’s problem:

image

It’s on average football attendance.

You’ll notice that only Clemson and FSU regularly draw super-big crowds (I’m not counting independent ND). They ARE the “big brands” in the ACC.

Other than that, only Virginia Tech averages over 60K.

SEVEN ACC teams average 40K or less per home game. They are NOT big brands.

Given that, just imagine what SMU will draw at home for teams like that, especially in a region where those schools don’t have a big fan following and/or a very large number of alumni.

In other words…this move might sell more tickets than playing Charlotte and UTSA at home…but will NOT be a huge money maker for SMU.

At the most, they’ll get maybe ONE ACC blue blood per year on their home schedule. The rest of their games will be sparsely attended.

lol…and there are people who think Duke is a Blue Blood Football + Basketball brand that is P2 worthy.

IF. big IF, the ACC blows up…After the P2 grabs who they want from the ACC + Big 12, Duke and Syracuse will land in the Big East and drop the facade of Football and Wake Forest and Boston College will end up in the AAC. Those two are the Oregon State and Washington State of the ACC.

I don’t think that ANYONE with half a brain considers Duke’s football brand to be P2 worthy.

Basketball…now that’s a different story. But as FSU’s lawsuit points out, 80% of college sports media money is in football.

Basketball might not be enough.

Yormark believes that basketball is undervalued, but I’m not willing to go that far.

I didn’t hear what happened. Is SMU getting CFP shares?

Not according to the article. We’ll see!

If true, then SMU will get neither media money, nor CFP money for this move. They’ll only get a modest increase in ticket sales.

They truly purchased a LEMON…from a conference that may not even hold together much longer.

LAW…if UH were in SMU’s shoes…we 100% would have made the same move and be extremely happy about it.

Option A: Play in a conference with Rice, Charlotte, UTSA, Temple, UAB, ECU, FAU, etc.

or…

Option B: Play in a Conference with Florida State, Clemson, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Miami, etc.

This was a no-brainer decision to everyone but you.

The $8 million they miss out in the AAC, that they raised, was chump change for SMU. The rest is a vested investment but anything they do make, or any increase in their profile, etc. is icing on the cake.

I’ve actually seen preseason polls where SMU will start next football season as a ranked P4 school. If that works out they would NOT have started ranked in the AAC!

Fortunately we weren’t in their shoes…because we are BETTER.

And thankfully, we weren’t forced to buy a lemon, as they were.

And of course, we are in no danger of being “surpassed” by them.

Let the record reflect that SMU got THUMPED by every P5 team they played this season…even 5-7 and 6-6 ones.

Sucks to be them…glad we are NOT.

Let’s see who enters next season as A RANKED P4 team.

Won’t make a difference.

Until they show that they can beat P5s (they sure as Hell didn’t this season), it won’t matter where they start.
