That was in Austin… 1988.
They super hated us after that.
And it was beautiful.
Also on this day in 2022, we were part of the highest combined scoring non-OT game in NCAA history. ![]()
I went to that game instead of the Astros game that night. I still kick myself about it.
today, in 1976:
My wife and I were at that game. It was a stunner!
It might have been the only time DKR was shutout at Home in his 20 years at UT.
It is hard to pick the most memorable UH football game ever, but the 1976 game in Austin against Texas is in my top 1%. After the game we all caravaned to New Braunfels for Wurstfest. It was quite the day and night.
Great memories.
One of the memos that have to be said about the UH- 30 UT -0 game is that Earl Campbell was injured and did not play.
I would love to see a video of that game!
Earl Campbell did not play.
Today in 2009: Case Keenum leads Houston to a crazy comeback in Tulsa as the Coogs win 46-45. Matt Hogan made a 51-yard kick (massive at the time – seemingly quaint now).
The backstory, how it happened, and video clips from the game, including Tom Franklin’s classic call:
Story 2: Matt Hogan is one of our contributors at GoCoogs and wrote about his kick:
Story 3:
Oral history with Matt Hogan on that day and the Tulsa fans that were being jerks. He’s never told these stories anywhere else:
I believe that was the year of the Curse of Megan Morton among certain football and baseball players. IYKYK
I remember making fun of the security folks who came out to stand in front of us midway through the 4th. “Look at the scoreboard! We’re not rushing the field if y’all win! Go stand in front of them!”
What a finish.
I REALLY wish there was audio from that sideline - sounds like madness over there. ![]()
I had never noticed before, but look at the Tulsa guy standing under the goalposts as the kick goes through. His soul left his body right there. ![]()
Rice Stadium vs UT
Earl Campbell runs one in on the right side. Going so fast he ran into Bevo and hit Bevo with his chect. Knocked Nevo on its ass.
UT has always hated us since we tied them 20-20 at their house in 1968. They Super Hated us after we won the SWC in our first year and beating them 30-0 at their house in 1976 (Wilson Whitley terrorized them). After winning the SWC 3 of our first years, they went full court push for the NCAA to hammer us. They ran the NCAA infractions committee.
I would think the Georgia Tech 222-0 thumping of Cumberland would top that, but I don’t know if the NCAA was a thing then.
Was that the play where he stiff armed a defender and picked him up and carried him 10yds ?
Yup. 1977. Earl “introduced” himself to Bevo. Game was at Rice Stadium, before 72,124. A crowd like that these days seems far fetched. UT won the game 35-21.
