You are right #2 was the highest ranking UH ever had during the regular season! The highest ranking UH ever had in the final polls was1976 and we were #4!

Bill Yeoman hosted pep rallies there. Governor John Connally visited less than a month before he was shot in Dallas. And students ate, played bridge, and danced there.
The original Cougar Den was the hub of the UH campus in the post-war years. 40+ photos:

I easily remember the original Cougar’s Den. With fondness.
In the Fall of 1966 Muhammad Ali came to The Den and spoke to the students. An inspiring talk about giving it your best,never quit, do not let adversity nor discrimination keep you from achieving your goals.
Met my future wife at The Den.

The Den was THE place for fraternities and sororities. Lots of good memories.

Within 5 weeks of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the University of Houston had mobilized toward an audacious plan. The University would provide training and logistics for new Navy recruits.

UH students aided in the war effort by enlisting, training in war production courses, or working in vital sectors necessary to a country at war.
By 1943, 10,000 trainees were enrolled in war production courses at UH.

Throwback: In 1990, David Klingler, Spoon, and the Coogs went to Lubbock on a Thursday night and shredded the Red Raiders, 51-35.
There were no reports of Tech players betting on the game.

Yes, while on probation and a reduced roster. HCJJ put together one of the best if not best UH season ever. I was there. Thank you for posting.

My wife and I went to the game. We left Houston immediately after the UNLV game and drove straight through to Durango, Colorado. Spent 3 days in the Durango/Silverton area. Left there on Wednesday night and drove to Lubbock. We got there early Thursday morning and stopped at a Denny’s to eat.
When we walked in, and were taken to our table, the first person I saw was Pat Foster.
What a game! Spoon ran all over them all night long. He pancaked at least three different players that game.

There was a lot more brewing behind the scenes before that shoving match. Later on coach Yeoman once told a gathering that “we no longer have to recruit a Warren McVea. Our program has come a long ways.”
Take that however you will…
I had some friends going to Tech at that time who were pretty convinced that they had the team to beat us. They had played Ohio State pretty tough the week before in Columbus and returned a pretty good team from the previous year.
But alas…

One of many reasons I have not liked the idea of playing Rice every year home and away. They did everything they could to keep us down for 25 years. They knew if they ever let us get a foothold in the city that we would dominate them in every way.
The only way I would ever play them again in either football or basketball would be at our place. Screw em!

Clearly from the very start riceoroni had one intent that can be described with many different words signifying the same exact same thing. Lessen, destroy, nullify, obliterate, squash U of H in every possible way. This is valid for sport but also academically. Think about it. A public university in the same city competing for higher education. What positives do we get to play ricoroni? We can have another home" game. It is great for home recruiting I read many times. The real question for me is. Does it really help with recruiting? Do we have ways of measuring it? uta. atm and riceoroni are our arch rivals and historical rivals.
These three schools in that order have done more to negatively impact UH. Could North Texas be a better opponent? It would give us a great opportunity to recruit the Northern DFW area. That would be a major opponent for them. Win/win?

10 years ago today, Houston beat #3 OU at NRG. Brandon Wilson returned a missed FG attempt 109.95 yards for the go-ahead score.
