Cougar History

15 years ago today, Case Keenum came back from a torn ACL to lead the Cougars over UCLA, 38-34.

That day, Ty Cloud celebrated his 21st birthday and got the first start of his career. He wrote about it for GoCoogs:

This play and this game made everyone in Houston from the inner city to the suburbs feel amazed and proud to be a Houstonian!

Sam Swearengin: I’m sure we must have run into each other since I was at those Ole Miss and Georgia games. Also at AUBURN in '73 when we went in undefeated with a potential Sugar Bowl bid on the line. We lost 0-7, I was on the sideline when out RB dropped the pass which would have tied the game.

Jim,

Just tons of Cougar history to remember! Mine start in 1966.

Excited to create more memories, starting this Saturday.

:football:

Butch, a few years before Coach Yeoman died, he invited me to eat lunch with him at Sugar Creek country club. Just like you had posted he shared some things about his past coaching acquaintances that really SURPRISED ME! He shared some things about Vince Lombardi a Bum Phillips that I wasn’t expecting?

I remember that day well. We started it off by spending the day betting on the ponies at.Louisiana Downs. I had a very good day, and won over $300, which was just icing on the cake for the big football win.

Wife and I attended that 1988 game.

It was astonishing to watch.

The Run-N-Shoot plus a Pardee defense.

My wife and I were in Waco that day. At halftime we were losing 5-0 and not feeling very well about our chances.

In the second half our Cougars demolished the Bears 23-0 to win going away.

Very large Cougar crowd attended the game. Mucho thousands. And it was hot! Heat for a day game in September ain’t new.

I was there, I was 12. I can still hear the pads popping when Singletary and Hodge would smash the piles.

Ohhh, what a glorious day it was to be a UH Cougar that day! The pregame taunting turned into tears. I asked the taunting fans after the game “Do you need a bear hug?”

Today, in 2007, 19-year-old Case Keenum made his first career start as UH beat Tulane 34-10 in the Superdome.

(There are no Case Keenum photos from that day anywhere, so L.J. Castile must suffice)

…and the National press went after us for running up the score. What is the same press writing today when you see similar scores?

What a bunch of hypocrites.

I did not remember the details of this game before writing this, but it might be the stupidest game I can recall:

lose the turnover battle 4-0
have two TOs returned for TDs
miss three 2-point conversions
win
