I attended my first UH football game in 1966 at the Dome against Tulsa.
Saw same two teams play again two years later - 100-6.
How about you guys, what year was your first UH game?
Wasn’t it 1965. First FB game in Dome.
Think we lost 14-0.

Did you know? In September 1969, Playboy’s Pigskin Preview (by Anson Mount) ranked the University of Houston Cougars as Preseason No. 1 in the nation.
This wasn’t rumor or bar-room legend — it’s printed fact. A forgotten but proud moment in Cougar lore!

When I got my global war on terror service and expeditionary medals, I thought,
“GWOT? You mean Giant Wall Of Text?”
I’m guessing the white spaces were where the nekkid girls would have been?
(Seriously, though… Everybody likes the “I only read Playboy for the articles” joke, but back in the day Hugh Hefner employed some legit writers.)
One of my all time favorite cartoon pics was in an issue. It showed a a pic of 2 big rocks with water in the background. There was a third rock looking object with what appeared to be an eye in the water, between the rocks. In the foreground was an easel with a painting on it, showing just the two rocks. Below, on the ground, was a pallet with paint and some brushes. I have always loved that pic.
Reviewing this comment, I realized I screwed it up. The full pic was of two large stones, one on each side of the pic with water in the background, between the two stones. In the foreground was an easel and painting. There was a paint pallet on the ground, along with some brushes, The painting pictured the two stones with water in the background, but in the water was what looked like a third stone, but it had an eye in the center. Maybe this better explains the original picture i found in Playboy Mag.
Today in 1970, No. 15 Houston ‘crush’ the Syracuse Orangemen 45-14 in the opener. RB Robert Ford scored on a 99-yard TD pass. Elmo Wright had 2 TDs. The Mad Dogs held the Orange to 219 yards while UH racked up 501.
QB Moon Mullins missed most of the game due to injury, but got in during the 4th quarter. Moon had led UH to nine-straight wins to end the 1969 season, including a Bluebonnet victory on the last day of the decade.
Do you mean Robert Ford not Wood on the 99-yard reception? Ford accomplished the feat twice. I attended both games at the Astrodome.
It was Terry Peel who threw both passes.
Thank you - no clue where I got Wood from. ![]()
It was Terry Peel to Robert Ford…twice for 99 yards.
I attended both games. Gary Mullins was recovering from knee surgery in 1970. Peel was his backup.
Great photos, thanks Ryan!
By the by Warren McVea also had a 99 yard TD catch and I also saw that.
Saw all 3 TD catches that covered 99 yards.
This was the first game I attended as a UH student in the Dome. I’d gone to some as a high schooler, but it was a different feeling to be cheering for fellow Coogs!
For the old timers, like me, but with much better memories. I witnessed one or more of those 99 yd td passes, but I remember, once upon a time, UH was on thier own 1 yard line, hiked the ball and a receiver was running down the right side line, all by himself. The pass hit him in the back, maybe in the helmet, because he did not look back. That one would have added to the national record of 99 yd td passes.
Today, in 1946, Houston played its first-ever football game at Public School Stadium:
Today is also the anniversary of the 20-20 tie in Austin in 1968:
There was once a time when Playboy and Cosmopolitan both had serious journalistic and literary chops. I wasn’t around at the time, but I assume it had the same vibe as when BuzzFeed News was winning Pulitzer Prizes.
Playboy had some great cartoonist also. One I’ll never forget. I tore it out of a magazine and put it under the glass cover on my desk.
I was at that game sitting on the goal line when Paul Gibson(I think) scored the winning TD……but in Austin, the refs claimed he was stopped at the 1/2 yard line on 4th down.
It was a great game until the last 30 sec.
Yeoman’s comment after the game was something to the effect…… you have to expect that up here !
