Reality was that on that play, Gibson and our entire offensive line were in the end zone.

No ref indicated a TD…… they all just stared at each other. They knew if they ruled a TD, they would have all been found floating facedown in the Colorado River the next morning.

I have never seen a photo or film footage of that play, but have talked to several people over the years that said that they were on the goal line, and that there was no doubt that Gibson was across the goal line.

He was and by a lot. All of us were cheering, but that is when I realized that NONE of the refs were indicating a TD.

Over the years, I have seen a lot of bad calls in Austin. Like Yeoman said, you have to expect that in Austin.

I don’t watch longhorn games, but I hope they lose them all …. Well, when they play ND, I just tune that game out :sunglasses:

There is no one in the whole world out there that I would root for Texas against.

My wife and I were Newlyweds in September 1968 and attended the UT game.

Like everyone else has said we saw Gipson score.

We returned 8 years later and it was a slaughter. One of our greatest Cougar memories.

Maybe you were next to me, or above or below me. The official on our side looked over to the sticks, moved the ball back just enough to display we had NOT gained the first down.

save as it ever was…

Today in 1962, Bill Yeoman debuts as head coach in a 19-0 win over Baylor. It’s also the first time the UH logo appeared on the helmets:

When the team flew back to Hobby Airport a crowd of 10,000 greeted them.

That was almost as big a story as the game itself.

I was at this game in East Lansing, many years ago. The game was close in the first half. Then UH just exploded in the 2nd half. Even though Michigan State was the defending national champion, (in some polls) they could not handle the triple option.

That was my first year of following Cougar athletics. My dad, and one of my friend’s dad, were both Cougar fans, and started taking him and me to the football games.

Yeah, as much as I enjoy providing historical docs for our history, I want to be fair for the younger fans that find this info for the years to come. This is a public forum and I’d rather the incredible history and writing style be the focal points.

Oregon State and Houston last played in 1970 in the Astrodome.

It was a crazy game: the Beavers accidentally blocked their own punt, UH starting QB Moon Mullins was ejected for fighting, the teams combined for 7 turnovers, and UH went for 2 on its first two scores (and failed).

Best coach name ever?

OSU’s Demosthenes Andrecopoulos.

I’m sure he was very philosophical about the defeat.

This is more “this week in history,” but the 9/23/1989 game at Arizona State was wild.

7 turnovers and 236 penalty yards on the road doesn’t usually foretell a 30 point win.

He went by Dee Andros to the fanbase, but I liked him full name enough to include it.
