we have a thread on the football board for Cougar History, so why not one here?
In 1967, the Big 10 held its first experiment with a three-ref crew when Houston visited Illinois.
Love these history nuggets 16 blocks in one game is just insane
Akeem was an absolute monster that night.
Today in 1997, UH beat Cal 54-51 at Hofheinz. Freshman Treva Crosby knocked down two free throws with 10 seconds left to break a 51-51 tie. Then Kenny Younger and Galen Robinson blocked consecutive shots in the final seconds before a Younger FT iced it.
Houston went to 7-0, its best start since 1969. The Coogs then lost 20 of 22, the first-ever 20-loss season in UH history. Alvin Brooks was fired at the end of the season, and Clyde Drexler was hired.
Ah, City Ball era…
Today, in 2018, the 24th-ranked Houston Cougars stormed back from a 15-point deficit to beat LSU, 82-76, in the 3rd game at Fertitta Center.
Galen finished with 18 points, six assists, and five boards. Armoni Brooks had 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Still one of the loudest games ever at FC. The crowd and our defense made a mess of LSU
Today, in 1983, Houston beat Pacific 112-58. More importantly, after the game, Houston Post columnist Tommy Bonk coined the phrase that would change Houston Basketball forever: Phi Slama Jama.
A game which I believe the atmosphere led us to victory. Also was the debut of Dejaun Jarreau.
Today is the anniversary of the Game of the Century. We have 4 pieces of content on the GOTC:
UH 54 - Cal 51.
I was at that game.
I sold programs for The Game of The Century.
We were given 10,000 and they all soon disappeared. Could have sold at least 20,000.
Then watched the game from the yellow seats. Pretty far away.
An incredible memory.
Guy V’s idea and one of the all time sporting events
My seat was 2 or 3 rows from the top of the gold level, but I was just glad to be in the building.
My seats were i n the “Loge/Purple” seating area. One row from the top. I could not see the score so I had to keep asking the folks in front of me to keep me updated. If one believes all they hear, there were about 250,000 in attendance.

My father and I sat in the first row of the yellow seats upstairs at the end facing the scoreboard. Perfect baseball seats LOL I decided that night to apply to UH. Up until then I’d planned on heading back east to go to Rutgers or Fairleigh Dickinson.
That game changed my life. I’m forever grateful to Guy V.
Ryan, ask around and see if you can find those Guy Lewis shows and Bill Yeoman shows. I’ve been looking for years.
