Cougar Mailbag plus update from JD

Thanks to everyone who provided input/suggestions on things you would like to see improved at UH athletic events. I passed them all along. What happens next is out of my control, but will keep you updated as I hear things.
On to the next assignment.
I do a weekly Cougar Mailbag during camp and also include some questions in my newsletter that starts back up Sept. 2.
Social media is hit-or-miss for gathering questions, so if you have any for me to answer I’d be happy to stockpile here and include them in the next few editions.
Thanks again.
Be sure to tune in to Talkin’ Bout Them Cougars podcast at 8 p.m. Sunday. Kelvin and Willie together should be a blast.

What’s the situation with the naming rights to the stadium? Have they restored the field? Has Nunez been successful in getting any new major sponsors in Houston?

My question is about the portal. We seem to have used the portal to strengthen every position, more than in years past. Was priority put on portal players, do we search the portal, do players search for us, is there a guide for interviewing portal players or do you just go off tape? I know CWF likes to recruit HS players and coach them up but this seems quick and exciting. How do you get chemistry with so many portal players, and do you look for portal players from the Houston area to relocate. I know NIL plays a big role with portal players, are we competitive in the B12?

A couple basketball questions

Have there been any discussions about players who are considering using a 5th season

I enjoy when he breaks down the roster talking about the competition with specific matchups in practice.

Has Weaver joined the team and what has he brought to the early practices?

For Fritz

He has been very salty about how good he feels this OL has been. From a schematics perspective, how much does he feel this will help them open up more of the playbook or does it simplify what they need to do to be successful?

Can we go back to natural grass? Good opportunity after the church fiasco.

How has John Herbert looked in camp so far? Have any edge rushers stood out?

Thanks!

It’s a good opportunity to spend extra millions on drainage, irrigation and turf that will continue to cost more to maintain, so probably not. :slightly_smiling_face:

Good points but if it will help with recruiting and player health and safety, (which is precisely why big-boy programs have grass) a grass field might be worth it in the long term, in my humble estimation. Penny-wise, pound-foolish?

This might have been asked already but any word on Boogie and/or Sanchez?

He’s gonna play this year.

I don’t think the playing surface is going to be a difference-maker in recruiting. Michigan and Ohio State do OK with turf. Money speaks louder than agronomy. :slightly_smiling_face:

It doesn’t make financial sense to lay out that kind of money with our budget and resources.

Fritz said they’re waiting on final ruling so there’s no issues later. Which seems to be the case for other teams as well
