Creech: The story behind Karen Sampson's special UH memento

A delicate trinket — gold with a white face and the letters UH and a small red heart painted on it and a charm that said “#1” hanging from it — was a gift she’d received two years before.

_And as the Cougars advanced in the tournament, she treasured it more than ever before. _
The pin was given to Karen — the wife of UH coach Kelvin Sampson by Terry Lewis — the son of the late legendary UH basketball coach Guy V. Lewis. Terry presented it to Sampson during the dedication of the facility named for his father on UH’s campus.
