What in the Sam Hill was that?
I am hoping Grimes had the flu. He didn’t want the ball.
I am hoping Deeky has a complete game adjustment. He did want the ball.

It happens. Gotta give Oklahoma State some credit, though. Actually it was good coaching on their part. Their big guy handle me is down low and shot well from the free-throw line forcing our guys to double down low while leaving guys open on the perimeter. We played pretty good down defense the second half but it wasn’t enough to overcome the big deficit for the first half. We were down by 18-19 points. Ball game.
Yes, Grimes and Deeky had bad games. Neither shut the ball but the biggest mistake was not figuring out how to beat the zone. Only once in the second half did I see someone get the ball in the middle and pass it to the player cutting to the basket. You can’t stand on the perimeter without movement… gotta slash to the basket to beat a zone. Otherwise you get what you saw this evening which was numerous three-point shots clanking off the rim from a below-average three-point shooting team.
They have time to figure it out & adjust before AAC play on 01/03
Just two OOC games left - 12/19 v UTEP, @ Portland 12/22.
Lots of practice and film time to get NCAA Tourney worthy.
its the zone…both are drivers…
in the zone, after you beat a player 1 on 1, there are 2 players waiting…
as of right now the only way we have to beat the zone is too shoot 3s or letting mills go crazy… deeky and grimes arent great 3pt shooters…
we have to come up with a way to beat the zone, because something similar will happen when we play zone teams going forward …
at the very least tell them to take on the 2 on 1 and go draw some fouls
we have 4 OOC left…Portland is part of a 3 game tourney
Thank you. I was going off the google schedule.
To readjust
Make that- time to get it right under game conditions before AAC play starts.
What we’re missing is floor leadership. It’s a shame that Hinton has to be that person when he’s still figuring out what he is at the college level.
When people are cold a floor leader takes over and makes something happen. Damn the plan. Damn the coaching.
It’s missing right now and has been from opening day. Hinton is the engine but is the team going to make him be the floor leader too? Maybe.
It’s one thing to say this or that guy has elite-level talent. That’s an innocuous way to describe someone you expect to play at a high level. But for Grimes and Jarreau to not find a way to make a bucket between them is unacceptable. Just unacceptable.
Did not look impressive today. Hope they jell and shoot better.
Where can I see a box score WITH attempts and conversions?
John O’Korn versus Case Keenum. One looked the part but one played the part.
Sampson is good at moving his guys into a rhythm where they’re playing their best ball at end. The year we lost to Michigan was absolute coaching mastery on whole.
But damn!
You can’t have your two most talented guys just taking up space for 40 minutes. I suspect there’s going to be some fatherly conversations coming.
My grandmother was as productive as Deeky and Grimes and she has been dead for 40 years. She had less turnovers than Deeky and she showed more energy than Grimes.
I hoped we’d be turning the corner by now…just not quite there yet. So frustrating as a fan. The talent is there. The coaching is there. The execution is missing.
We are missing the senior leadership we had in the last couple of years. We have one senior on the whole team; by contrast OSU started 4 seniors and a soph today.
But we were also missing production from the 2 starting guards. I can guarantee you that, with what we saw today, Grimes and Jarreau would not be starting our next game under Guy Lewis.
I agree with that. Guy liked kids to go to the rim when things weren’t falling. Force the issue.
I can say Amen to that Red…Deeky just looked lackadaisical and out of sync most of the game, but when he pulled that bonehead play and tried to throw the ball in with both of his feet clearly in bounds, I think that sent coach over the edge…not sure Jarreau played the rest of the way.
Grimes acts like he doesn’t want the ball. He finally drove the lane in the second half but instead of shooting he tried an alleyoop play that failed miserably.
It’s obvious this team is young and still trying to get on the same page, but when perhaps your two most touted players throw a goose egg you just aren’t going to win many games.
Loved the hustle of Alley, especially in the second half during our great comeback. And I can’t say enough about Mills. He was just about our only player who had the ability to drive into the lane and get off a shot.
On the bright side, it appears at this moment we will not be losing any players to the NBA draft. In all seriousness we need our starting guards to step up and become leaders.
And oh yeah, I thought Sasser did a really good job today. Even saw him drive to the basket and get a plus one. He is a pure freshman, so I can forgive him for not paying attention to the clock and letting it run out while he was dribbling around near half court. Sampson snapped him out of the game quickly but later let his future star come right back into the game.
To be honest, this transition is taking longer than we all hoped for. But I still maintain when these guys get on the same page we are going to be very good. Let’s all hope it is this year and before conference play starts…
Not going to get there this year building and getting ready for next year
wofford wins at UNC., #3 Ohio St. getting killed vs. Minny and Purdue gets destroyed against a horrible Nebraska team. Just one of those days. Happens. Just move on to the next.
Our backcourt was definitely not Deek-Q country today
You know this after 9 games? Impressive.
