Discussion: Houston's remaining pathways to the Championship Game

To some, season’s over. If that’s your opinion, then feel free to exit out this discussion. To those that still have faith, here’s what we need:

Bottom Line → Houston MUST win out. We don’t control our destiny, but we must win out to even have a small chance.

PATHWAY #1 (Texas Tech):

  • Texas Tech: must win out the rest of their season
  • BYU: must lose to Texas Tech and TCU (even better if UCF gets the upset)
  • Cincinnati: must lose to Arizona or TCU
  • Utah: just needs one more loss (Baylor, Kansas State, or Kansas)
  • Arizona State: Houston holds the tie breaker

PATHWAY #2 (BYU):

  • BYU: must win out the rest of their season
  • Texas Tech: needs to lose 2 more games (BYU, and UCF or West Virginia
  • Cincinnati: must lose to BYU, and Arizona or TCU)
  • Utah: just needs one more loss (Baylor, Kansas State, or Kansas)
  • Arizona State: Houston holds the tie breaker

That’s essentially the only way we have a shot. Odds are definitely NOT on our side. We have no control over our destiny even if we win out, but it is SOMETHING that we can still keep faith in.

@uhlaw97 Thoughts?

We are NOT mathematically/categorically out of the CCG race.

And that’s the bottom line…because Stone Cold said so!

At this point, lets hope they win one more lmao. WV was supposed to be the gimme.

At this point it’s not worth worrying about. The scenarios to get us there are far-fetched. There’s a far better chance of us dropping another one than there is of any of these scenarios coming to fruition.

We can go 10-2, which would be unreal given our past 2 seasons.

Win a Bowl Game and we finish 11-2. Completely unreal!

Even 8-4 is incredible given the last couple years. This was not a championship-or-bust year. We have the potential to double our all-time Big 12 win total this year and achieve a winning conference record with another win. We could lose every game from here on out and you’d not hear another major complaint from me.

Gotta post it…

I don’t think this pathway is as far fetched as it sounds. I think Arizona, TCU and Kansas State are all sleepers. We gotta beat TCU though.

The Coogs just choked away their momentum as a 2 TD favorite, and you want to muse over how the universe could act to put the Coogs in the conference championship?

I would say, that’s some elaborate, high-level trolling, but it appears that you’re serious…

If we can’t pick up two more wins we have real issues. lol UCF and Baylor are both doable games. TCU is at home. We gotta find a way to channel that focus we had against the Arizona teams.

At some point it stops being about what everybody else does and what we do. Let’s hope we start by not turning the ball over, and Mehki Mews calling Peter.

Thats nonsense. We have already over achieved a great deal this year to be at 7-2! We were picked in the bottom quarter of Big 12 by EVERYBODY this season. We get one more win and bring it to 8, and a winning conference record, that is a big deal and good success and a big step up from last year. If we can get 2 more wins, thats just icing on the cake. But getting to 8 wins is a major deal. I think we’ll do it, and it should be appreciated by everyone here.

It isn’t nonsense. You don’t get picked to be at the bottom of the conference, beat the two Arizona schools, sport a 7-1 record, then magically become the worst team in the conference because you drop a game to WVU due to turnovers.

We’re not magically a bad team again. That’s not how it works. Fifita nearly had a perfect game and we STILL managed to beat them. 8 wins is still a big deal, but 9 wins is still on the table.

It wasn’t over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Win out and hope for a lot of help

There’s everything to still play for, even if a lot of it is out of our hands. At this point of the season I’ll take it. I don’t subscribe to the “meaningless bowl game” garbage. Fritz is building something here, if this turns out to be the foundation year at 8-4, 9-3 or 10-2 there will be a lot to celebrate. We’re headed in the right direction.
