Naviar was offered the job when Herman left. He didn’t take it.
Carrell is the OLB coach
This is good!
Hopefully our next hire does not bring former fans to the board offering their condolences.
Carrel is a good coach. I wouldn’t want him as our new DC, but I hope he remains on the staff. He’s a really competent guy and solid recruiter.
The change needed to me made but it’s still very concerning. What type of DC can we expect given the factors involved next year? Not much experience returning, A coach that will be on the hot seat. Who wants that? I really think next season will be Major’s last.
Yeah, we’ll have to hope we can lure a top middle school coordinator. No way someone who’s been fired or works in a conference like C-USA is coming to UH and doubling his salary.
Sarcasm, it was.
Theres a number of top G5 guys out there who would be a nice fit. I really like Koenning at Troy…DCs who go to Baton rouge and smack LSU in the mouth play my kind of defense.
The only reason to consider Gibbs is the recruiting end of things, as Spav, would also come, and is outstanding recruiter and we desperately need that right now.
Firing this guy was the best move that the Coogs could have made this early in the Pre-Bowl season. I believe that he should have been canned after we lost to SMU. The defense basically cost us 3-4 losses this year as the offense was certainly good enough to win every game. I hope that Briles does not move on to another job after this year. Would love to see him be the OC against OK and Washington State next year. We can only hope that we have a better defense next year.
Yea, the CMA hot seat is a legit fear for the new DC. He’ll be expected to save the staff by himself.
Pardon me, I still say that the offense may have been talented enough to win every game, but vs SMU was not good. Against Tech, we had that game and only needed to keep the pedal down, and the offense decided not to be good for a while. Against Tulsa, the offense started out not good, and the game really turned on the defense forcing turnovers.
There were so many wasted possessions, and we can say that because when the offense was being used correctly, there was no team on our schedule that could stop it. Our OC needs to get better at recognizing defenses, because Tulsa and SMU were both able to sucker him into overplaying the run, which they were planning and able to stuff.
I’m not a D’Onofrio apologist per se, and I do think that a turnover-oriented defense like Gibbs emphasized here probably would have led to more success, but only because it would have given the offense more chances to score before the other offense could get comfortable and start to dictate the game. The offense still would have had to do smart things and improve its efficiency to complete the wins. First thing to fix there is for wide receivers to catch the ball. Brooker became a valuable receiver because he actually catches the ball reliably, and King was an effective runner because he recognized that his feet were more reliable than most of his receivers’ hands.
And to think back, Brooker couldn’t seem to catch a cold his junior year so his improvement there was huge. Hopefully, our wide receivers can see a similar large improvement in catching the ball next year.
Whatever Dana Holgersen did while he was here to get receivers to catch the ball seemed to work very well.
It’s not the worse news if Applewhite would leave.
In your scenario:
Levine - 3 Seasons
Herman - 2 Seasons
Major - 2 Seasons
This would not be good news for sure. Recruiting wise, why would someone pick UH when their coach might not even be on campus by the time they see the field? UH has some gaps to fill on defense and you want a brand new staff (except maybe Briles?) to start recruiting now?
It was a disappointing end to the season for sure but 8-4 is not enough to push a 2nd year coach out the door. Major replaced the OC after his first season. Now he is replacing the DC after his 2nd season. As a first-time HC, he appears to have made two Major (pun intended) mistakes in his selection for coordinators. Let’s see how he fixes the defense and evaluate next season after Year 3.
The rumor of CMA to Tech has already been debunked by other Coog sites. He isn’t going anywhere.
No. It wouldn’t be. We would just hire a new HC. Like we always have.
If Dana was here, Corbin would be on the scout team. A third-stringer on the scout team.
I would take it step further and bypass Coog sites and go w Duarte assertion that CMA isn’t going anywhere. As a non CMA basher , hate to admit but Tech can do much better. They will be looking higher up the ladder than 2 yr G5 Coach.
Applewhite isn’t going anywhere this year. He sure better get things squared up next year, or he will be in big time jeopardy. He just better hope that Briles doesn’t take the Texas State job just to be getting the HC job at a school that has no business even playing football.
That’s right. He should be fired as soon as someone breaks a bone or tears a ligament!
