Small world, wonder if dad had any input on coming to UH.
The rumor is Fritz donated part of his own salary as a “NIL donation” to get him to transfer here.
Think of it as an investment in himself.
He wanted to make sure he had the QB he wanted to be succesful
Willie mentioned it in his presser.
The way the portal opened up for us it could be a special year, and CWF investment just may payoff.
The talent we brought when I keep hearing that we are broke is really something!
We aren’t broke…we will be a top NIL school
We already are in basketball…just wait until the Football team starts rolling.
NIL is very different than the athletic departments fund…we just need a GO-GETTER to run the collective to find creative Bucket #2 NIL opportunities
We are broke couldn’t even keep Ethridge on staff and he is married to Fritz’s daughter
That’s the Athletic side budget. We aren’t receiving full shares from the Big 12 yet
Acquiring players comes from the NIL buckets.
Even our baseball team has adequate NIL funds
I have a friend, from Dallas, that knows a high school baseball recruit that was offered $50k from UH
Mississippi state offered $20k
He chose Mississippi State…go figure
Speaks very poorly of the state of our program and our coach.
Miss State has a top quality baseball program that has gone to the college world series a lot. We’ve been, what…once or twice…EVER. Its about winning, not money.
I would include development if the player aspires to play at the next level…
So Connor is handed the QB job if that’s the case. Quite opposite of how Coach Sampson runs his program. Weigman lost his job at A&M. Now he is guaranteed not to compete at Houston.
I would not say handed, but CWF is a good enough coach to realize we needed serious upgrade at QB. For the offense we will run, CW fits it perfectly.
We know what happened to Barbay without a QB.
Donovan did not compete in the Spring. He watched others while rehabbing. He was the unproven QB1, who was benched eventually. Now Connor is personally paid through the HC. Good to great coaches make players compete. It’s not fair and could divide a room of players. He gave Smith the starts and he was terrible. Fritz also had connections with Smith’s family. You say “good enough” to see coogs need a QB upgrade is not saying much.
Given that Smith had been a starter with a lot of passing yardage the previous season, it’s not entirely accurate to say that he was “unproven.” He didn’t pan out as hoped, but one cannot say that he was “unproven” given his past history as a starter at Tech with a win over UT, and the yardage he had thrown for the previous season at UH.
As for Weigman…given his history as a P2 starter, and how lousy our QB play was last season, it’d be a minor miracle for anyone to win the starting job over him. I’m sure everyone will get their fair chance to show what they can do in Spring training, but I wouldn’t bet against Weigman being named the starter.
Smith was not the answer, left TT as their 3rd stringer and didn’t do much here. Chriss seems to be a nice guy and has some wheels but is not the answer either. Connor is a former (recent) starter for an SEC team and was 4-1 prior to getting injured. It sems if there is a real QB battle, it may be between Connor and some of the other in the room. McMichael?
It’s McMickle. No QB competition will happen, Connor will start even if he never throws a pass in the Spring. McMickle is the only one who has a chance if it was fair game.
CWF saw the opportunity to land a 5* QB that fits his system and he went for it. It has been happening for 50 years, only difference is now it is legal.
Connor lost his job. Are you interested in how? He came back from injury at A&M and his play was not good enough. Now how does that translate to success in the Big 12? This takes the intrigue away from a successful season. Players actually get better with competition.
