Sorry for the confusion…I am not the ref, a close friend is. Tried to quote him best I could remember.

I keep coming back to 2004. Remember 10-7 at Reliant? Most everyone thought we would name our score. At least one former talk show host lost a small fortune on UH that day.

Yes, we have more talent than Rice. Yes, we should beat Rice every time we play them. And yet we’ve lost to Rice 5 times since 2000.

Not to say I think we’ll lose. I think we’ll win. But 21 is an awfully big number, especially when Rice will have played a game already, and when we’re playing our first game under a new OC.

I don’t care. Coaches should know losing to rice is grounds for dismissal.

I guess we should’ve fired Briles in 2004, fired Sumlin in 2008, and fired Sumlin again in 2010.

If we lose to Rice and go 3-8, Applewhite isn’t here by the end of the season

At least we beat Tulane that year.

3-8? If we lose to Rice, we’re not going to win any game left on the schedule. Rice needs a ton of things to happen to even stay in the game. That’s without mentioning their lack of talent when their starters need a breather. Like most years and most teams we play with lessor talent, they’ll find that out when they start subbing.

This is a trap game. Yeoman used to hate it when the fans started thumping their chests before the season started. Remembering that 2004 game, my son was at Rice and had 2 team members as roommates. He played HS football and could have walked on. Point is, he knew football. I remember him telling me that Rice was quietly focusing on UH. They had spent a whole bunch of the summer just prepping for that one game. He didn’t say much during the game but after he told me the Rice players had digested every “loud-mouth” comment made by UH fans.

So yes, on paper UH is vastly superior. But I remember Yeoman saying time and again, “They give scholarships too.” Words to live by from the man who knew both sides of that deal. Just sayin’…

Every game is a trap game if we prepare like we did against Tulsa and Tulane last season. Let’s not forget that we have a HC that is out to prove a lot of people wrong (I believe he will). We have scholarship players that are focusing on Rice as well, ours are just better; I don’t think anyone is chest thumping. It’s also a shame we’re at the point of considering this could be an upset. Is it faith in Rice or little faith in our HC? Either way, we should win this game.

I used 3-8 because that was our record in the referenced 2004 season when we lost to Rice

We should. My favorite word in English is should.

Yeoman’s last game at the Dome. I came back to school early for that one. :frowning:

Chris, it’s every coaches nightmare; opening against a so called patsy followed by a big game. I don’t care how overconfident the fans get, I worry about the players looking ahead to Arizona.

100% agree Mike. This is where we will see if our Team has understood why we struggled last year. We can all expect a much more aggressive offense but what I want to see first and foremost are fundamentals. You perfect your craft and you become hard to beat. The addition to the many 6’2" receivers tell me that we will “out-muscle” our opponents with quick draws that will hugely benefit the run. We can keep going to become “physically” unpredictable. Easier said than done.
