ESPN+ subscriber article, but Joseph Tugler is included here as an NBA Draft riser along with Rutgers’ Dylan Harper, Illinois’ Kasparas Jakucionis, and Duke’s Kon Knueppel.
ESPN’s top NBA draft analyst Jonathon Givony projects Tugler in the 25-50 draft range, and discusses his unicorn-like measurables and ability to change the game defensively with his energy and positional versatility.
I didn’t think Tugler played all that well in Vegas. Like Francis he has no scoring touch around the basket and really looked out of place on defense at times.
Yes he has all the intangibles but a lot to prove this year.
I really wish Sampson would design some plays for Tug to shoot the ball, not just an occasional launched Trey against bad teams.
None of our notable bigs have had great touch in the paint early on in their careers. I’d even put Jarace in that category. Tugler will certainly get better as the game slows down for him, but I think the biggest factor in his NBA potential is his defense. Like Givony said, he is an absolute unicorn. At the college level, he’s able to switch onto any position and even when he gets beat, his length allows him to catch up and block the shot. I seriously doubt any NBA scout is looking at him for his offensive prowess. But defensively, he’s undeniably a game changer.
I’ve seen Tugler try a hook shot a few times already and it is just flat out ugly. He doesn’t seem to have great handles on the offensive side but he could definitely be a Clint Capela type in the NBA…
