Economic Impact of College Football Bowl Games

It is well documented that big time football games have a significant economic impact on cities such as Houston. UT alums in Houston may let “school pride” guide their thinking. But the reality is they are doing so at a significant cost to this community. That’s real money that’s lost forever.

That’s why there is so much corruption in bowl game committees. A lot of “gifts” exchanging hands, commitments for invited schools to not only sell a certain amount of tickets (promise of tourism) but also filling up hotel rooms. It’s the only time in sports that ticket sales is a bigger revenue stream than tv advertising revenue.
