Flemings Rank in All Time UH Guards

Ha… he’d be getting very bad advice to stay here another year… see Toppin.

Virtually every year the top 5 players (definitely #1) are true Freshmen. In no world does Kingston become #1 by staying another year. Enjoy this year, because he is gone!

No Doubt Alvin was an underrated guard. That stretch in the 80s for 24 5A was part of a broader golden era where coastal Houston-area districts were stacked with talent and strong coaching, so every district game felt like a playoff. District 24-5A back then. Programs like Ball High , Clear Lake, La Marque, and Texas City consistently produced tough, physical teams.

And Carl Hilton had Ball High rolling around the 1980–81 season — that run to the state title game is still talked about bypeople who followed Texas prep basketball closely.

If you were following back then, did you mostly watch in person or just keep up through local coverage?

Damon Jones, UH Guard, went to Galveston Ball High, played in the NBA and unfortunately was named in the NBA gambling scandal.

I reported games, both football and hoops for many years in various places like Conroe, Houston, Brazoria County and other areas.
Saw some great teams over the years and great players

Y’all named some good ones but Flemings takes the cake as the best true freshman guard at UH.

Why ?

Flemings is the best player on a 23-3 team as a true freshman & go to guy for a team fighting for a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Also playing on the best basketball conference filled with NBA future players. That’s the best resume and argument, imo.

Senior Jamal $head > Flemdawg

Rob Williams was the best freshman point guard I have seen play at UH and I’ve been watching the UH games since 1969.

It’s too bad that he and Benny Anders got off track beginning at the '82 Final Four in New Orleans.

You obviously weren’t around for Rob Williams or even Birdsong…and I love Flemings, but Sharp is the guy who carries this team on a daily basis as the teams senior leader.
That said, Flemdawg is just very special. We need to enjoy him for the year we have him and then follow his promising career forward.

He (Sharp) may be our leader but not our best player. Kid is so special that he plays his best against the best teams in our schedule.

Greatest PG in UH history if we win the natty this year. He’s already top 5.

Agree Flem is so special, but Sharp is the leader on this team…he is the defensive dawg on this team and leads by example. I think Cenac has as much raw talent as Flemings, but only time will tell on the next level. I hope they both become legendary NBA players. And I also hope they help lead us to a national title their only year here…Rob Williams and Birdsong, as freshmen, would also be the best players on this team…

Jo, if we win a national title I will certainly and gladly agree with you…

Certainly top 5 in talent, but in my mind at least, there needs to be leadership and longevity to be considered UH GOAT at G. Shead played 4 years at UH and worked his way to being arguably, the best leader at G in UH history. Otis played 4 years at UH and was the leading scorer in three of those four years. Keep in mind in Otis’ sophomore year, the first year he led the team in scoring, he was playing with Louis Dunbar, another G who scored.

No doubt there will be endless discussions on who the GOAT is, but for me, the criteria includes talent, leadership and longevity.

I’m among the last of the Coog old-timers. I will be 88 this year and while I have a cancer I hope to be around for some future years of Cougar Basketball. I can no longer attend games but had season tickets-was at the Dome for the Game of the Century against UCLA and all the homers with Phi Slamma Jama. I’ve seen all the great ones. The young man which is the subject of this thread is a truly amazing player but until he brings us a National championship I will keep my short list to players who contributed more than one year.

Back then players like Birdsong had more reason to get their degree as well… they may not be setup for life off of their NBA salaries…

Now when you’re drafted you’re guaranteed to be at least a millionaire and if you’re a one and done a multimillionaire…
