Looking for some good food suggestions to take the Wife Saturday night after the victory and maybe some Brunch suggestions for Sunday
They have an Applebee’s
In the SWC days, my Baylor friends took me several times to George’s. Been around since 1930. Good pre and post game atmosphere.
George’s is a good postgame spot for a greasy college meal after the game.
My go to Sunday brunch right now is Maria Mezcaleria which has a great carne asada con huevos entree on the brunch menu
Both spots are in or close to BU/Downtown.
I grew up in Waco and my wife went to Baylor. We’ll be there. We get Poppa Rollo’s pizza every time we go back. I’m also a big fan of Bush’s fried chicken tenders.
Magnolia Market! Maybe you’ll see Chip and Joanna.
Piccadilly still open?
Love me some Poppa Rollos and it’s my #1 in town but I think it’s one of those places that you grow up with loving or eat as an adult and hate. Everyone from out of town that I’ve taken has thought it was a fun place to eat but that the pizza sucks.
Recommending food for someone from Houston is difficult since everything we have ya’ll have better. It’s much easier to recommend places for people from Ames or Provo. We do have two Texas Monthly Top 100 BBQ joints in Guess (close to BU) and Helberg (a 15-minute drive, but the best in town imo), so if you’re trying to hit places on that list there are two options.
Thoughts on Guess BBQ ?
Rudy’s Country Store ? Gotta love BBQ in a Tourist Trap setting.
The Baylor Club in the stadium looks tight.
Paul Cat from 365 goes there.
Is it a 7 day a week functioning restaurant/bar ?
UH needs similar.
1.) Guess is good, but Helberg is better (imo)
2.) Rudy’s in Waco is the same as Rudy’s in Houston or anywhere else in Texas
3.) The Baylor Club is alright, but isn’t open for normal ClubCorp business on gameday or the Monday after. For fine dining 135 Prime is easily the best with Diamondbacks being #2.
4.) Underrated quick bite place is Alpha Omega which is downtown and has the best Greek food I’ve had in CenTex (including Austin in that)
God I wish. I could go for some Picadilly fried chicken, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes right now.
It’s not that our food is better. Its that we keep eating at restaurants til we find our favorite for that day.
La Fiesta was what I grew-up on. I went there earlier this year and It wasn’t quite the same as when I was young, but still good.
FYI all the Magnolia stuff including the restaurant is closed on Sundays.
I had brunch at Milo downtown last week and it was great!
For a unique sandwich shop, try a Schmaltz for an early lunch. TownWest location is open Saturday I believe. Its a Waco tradition. For steaks there is Diamondbacks downtown, and Heitmillers on I 35. Salt Grass as well if you want to help ole TF … Get a big O at Georges and the food is pretty good with atmosphere. Another good one for pregame is Slow Rise in Woodway off hwy 84. Great Pizza/salads/beer and room for indoor and outdoor dining/drinking. Its way better the Poppa Rollo IMO.
Waco has most of the popular chains such as PF Chang, Walk Ons, Chuys, Chilis, etc. Downtown Waco has been revived over the past few years, there are many new places to eat and drink.
Isn’t there a big Czech restaurant stop near Waco? West, Tx?
On the north side is the Czech stop bakery. On the South side is Slovaceks which is a mini-Buccees with better sausage
Both not bad, but for a real treat go north on the feeder road past the Czech stop at the light and turn right. Look for Gerik’s bakery about 2 blocks up. You can get the very best Kolaches and even a Pivo on tap for breakfast. A real locals hang out.
Real Coogs go to 7-11
