I think a change is necessary but when you invite the wolves in to write the rules for sheep it’s a bad deal. Saban and Myers benefitted for years from a corrupt system of under the table payments. Now they’re the patriarchs of student welfare? Hell, invite the fans of Miami-OH to sit on the committee.
This is more about rural powerhouses losing control of cash flow to the masses. In the current system one wealthy guy from Miami can infuse as much cash as the entire booster contingents of Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kentucky combined.
I still hate the current NIL though. I think a 1-year death penalty for tampering with the portal would be the best, simplest idea. The “Night Portal” is the opening that lets the meth into the system.
Saban is a voice I’d least like to hear and has the lowest amount of credibility on this subject. His main goal has nothing to do with student welfare.
Agreed.
My thoughts exactly. Looking at that list of people invited to this event, none of them are looking to “save” college sports and all of them are there to maximize whatever interest they represent.
Look, none of us believe that the parties who participated in yesterday’s meeting went there with altruistic motives. However, the issue regarding enforcement of a single set of national rules, and some notion of roster stability ring true for me. College ball should not be treated as if it were a professional league, regardless of what players may think.
I’m with you on that, but the level of silliness is out of control and any attempt to make changes is going to met with lawsuits and friendly judges.
You’ll know what the agenda was when you see how the SEC and B10 come out in the end.
If there’s common sense reform and everyone has access to resources, including the G5 then I’ll eat my words. But me thinks it won’t be long before you start getting “unnamed committee members” dropping quotes to the media like, “we all need to realize that some organizations in this contribute more than others.”
I’m more of a softy for a broad, competitive, an open environment. It wasn’t that long ago that I was a frustrated g5 fan. I sympathize with the “have-nots.” I just don’t want an outcome that allows more resources to flow to some parties because of a caste system.
If not to benefit the Big 12, what are Commissioner Yormark’s motives?
When Saban speaks about how under the table recruiting hurt CFB because it created unfair competitive advantages and taught kids the wrong lessons about being rewarded for breaking the rules, then I’ll listen.
Players are the last to the trough. Fix the broadcasters, coaches, and major boosters too.
