Former Texas quarterback Chris Simms: Major Applewhite ‘treated me like crap’

“Herman is a true, hard-nosed Xs-and-Os football coach,” Simms said. “You don’t get on Urban Meyer’s coaching staff unless you’re that type of guy. So I think Major’s a pretty smart football mind. He knows how college football works and all the intricacies of it, and I do think he’ll be successful there at Houston.”

If you mean why I posted, it was for the quote I picked out. Simms, begrudgingly, still thinks Applewhite will be successful. I think that is impressive, that a guy that hates CMA’s guts still respects him enough to say that.

As far as their conflict at UT, the Chron had to try and tie into that for clicks, I guess. Sounds more like a vet giving a rookie a hard time and the rookie being unable to handle it.

It was more about why chron ran it. Just seems stupid to me.

The same C Simms who had a limo drive drop him off at first UT practice?

That’s callled fire in the belly- and I like that.

Our coach is a ferocious competitor 100% of the time…“Chrissie” found that out…Just the person i want to win games for us…

Definitely, but it’s the Chron.

Simms was always a smarmy, entitled prick while Applewhite was a hardworking competitor. Big surprise the two didn’t get along as college kids.

One of my high school friends had a dorm down the hall from Simms at UT for a semester. It was a constant party. Trash strewn all in the hall, coke, needles, girls coming and going at all hours, paid security, and RAs couldn’t do a thing about it because saying something would have gotten them kicked out of UT. My friend ended up transferring to another dorm.after that semester was out.

For the clicks. All clicks matter!

I listened to the whole “interview”. Superstars usually grow on me. I hated Orlando Shaq. He was loud, arrogant and obnoxious. As he got older he grew on me. And I love his antics today. Lots of other stories like that. And it has less to do with their success and a lot more to do with their maturity…and mine.

Nothin about that interview made me like Simms more. They say “time heals” but listening to him just stirred up old feelings and maybe some new ones. The end of the discussion about Applewhite, where they talk about physical altercations? Dude, take the high-road.

If anything, this makes me like Applewhite more.

I grew up surrounded by Aggie family on both sides, but there was one rogue uncle on my mom’s side who went to UT and another uncle who married into my Dad’s side of the family. Nonetheless, I remember they were all on team Applewhite. My Aggie family even kind of sympathized a little for Major and threw out the idea that he should transfer to Aggieland. My Dad’s brother-in-law went on quite a few anti-Simms rants using some colorful language to say the least.

I would be more worried if Major wasn’t competitive when someone came in to take his job. This just comes off as whiny from Chris Simms, and that’s not a surprise. With all of Applewhite’s in-state history, I think it’s kind of cool how things worked out with him and UH.

Major was the better QB. I think if they hadn’t pulled him for the pressure to play Simms , they might’ve won another MNC.

I think you’re right.

Chris, I didn’t get along with everyone in college either.

It was said at the time that Mack Brown promised Phil that his son would start at Whornsville. MA was a major obstacle (pun intended). Let’s not forget to give Chrissy his due: set a Holiday Bowl record by completing 4 interceptions; threw a record 99-yard interception in the Senior Bowl.
