Frenchy's Chicken

The Houston Chronicle named Frenchy’s Chicken one of the best fried chicken places in Houston. Given Frenchy’s pops up every now and then in CoogFan posts, and it is across the street from UH on Scott St., I thought it is fitting that we should post the notoriety.

I have to eat fried chicken very sparingly these days but if there are places on the list that you have tried that are worthy of mention, don’t keep them to yourself.

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, started in Tennessee. Never a bad Gus’s experience, I’ve hit the Gus’s fare in Memphis, Little Rock, and both Houston locations.

Bush’s Chicken is good, and a fixture in many small TX towns.

I eat at the one in Brenham once in awhile.

I was in line at Frenchy’s after a game. My buddy, Earl Jimmerson, showed up. He is the marketing guy for the company. I commented about the long line and his reply “Vaughan, it ain’t a line, it’s a social event”.

not talking about Frenchys

However -Chronicle reviews leave alot to be desired.

No mention of Goodson’s EVER, or Tony’s Mexican restaurant, Tia Maria’s, Adriatic Cafe, Bubba’s 33, and I could go on and on. Most often they mention some elegant, high priced eatery that after looking on Google reviews gets a HARD PASS from me.

Just sayin’. I’m not some hillbilly yet I like a down to earth joint MOST of the time.

Being a hillbilly is where it’s at these days. Don’t cloak it. Get your Lil Abner clothes on and flaunt it.

Here in NW Iowa we have a small chain called Pizza Ranch. The pizza is ok but their broasted chicken is really good.

As the young folks say, “I f**k with Gus’s!”

Also, on a personal level, one of my son’s has a serious gluten allergy, and Gus’s does not use flour, but corn starch, so he can eat it!

Also, their collards are delicious :yum:

When I was in Iowa City, I used to go to the Amana Colonies for fried chicken! The Amish know what’s up.

Also, when I was in Law School, the Culver’s in Coralville used to sell fried chicken and it was damn good.
