Future Realignment Thread

Uppity? We were a dominant program for 10 years as a major independent before we joined the SWC. Then we won the SWC 3 times in the first 4 years in FB, and were usually a respectable program in FB. We have a great history in BB and have been to the Final 4 seven times. We NEVER should have been left out of the Big 12 in the first place, and the only reason it happened was our leadership was terrible in every respect at the time the Big 12 was created. We overcame every bad decision and every prejudice against our school and finally got there. Wannabe schools who havent REMOTELY done we what we have done deserve any question or justification we put to them.

Drake Toll has a lot of nonsense on his shows.

I listened to a bit of Locked on Big 12 and Parker reps UH well. I got a kick in the most recent episode when the panel floating the idea of SMU joining the B12. It was funny when they said the only school that would be happy adding SMU would be Utah.

Monte, I know our history. I know our present. I know that without the political clout of Tillman Fertitta, we would still be in the AAC. Our fans just don’t support very well unless we are winning and winning big. We probably have the ficklest fan base in the conference and our attendance records back that up.

When in conference meetings, ADs look at who would bring more value to their particular situation. Would you want a team who will bring only a couple of hundred to a game at your house or one that will bring a few thousand. I know how our road following looks. I have sat in the stands at many away games and realized how few we Coog fans were. Yes, we have had a few games where we have brought good crowds, but those were outliers.

Then look at our home attendance in football; we averaged under 29K for home games – last in the conference by a few thousand. When evaluating future applicants for conference membership, what we did on the field a generation or two in the past is irrelevant; the here and now is what they look at.

Our school and our city, does not support losers. We have had a couple of bad years in a row. We need to let CWF put a winning team on the field and see what the attendance is then. My guess is that it will improve quite a bit. Of course, your point is that we need to support the Coogs, win or lose and you are right. But that has been a problem at our school for a long time.

We never had a 5+ years of consistent winning seasons to get the whole city on board.

Indeed. It is going to be fascinating on how we progress this season. HCWF has to win this season. He has got to get at least six wins minimum. Even six wins is border line acceptable for being in Houston. Home to fans that like to stay home if you do not win big. This has to change, change now. Our new A.D. has an historical challenge, amazing opportunity to get people into our stadium.

NEVER? Dont use that word unless it applies. From the mid 60s to the late 70s, Yeoman won 9 years in a row, had a losing season, then won 6 years in a row, for 15 winning seasons in 16 years. It is a lot tougher to win now for us, but CWF has won consistently where ever he has been. I think he starts winning with Houston this year, and we can go from there.

I wasn’t born yet to experience the Yeoman years.
My first year as a fan was Sumlin’s first season.

Aldine blue is correct. Bill Yeoman put out a tremendous winning program. Yet attendance faltered.

Our Alums and Students have not supported UH Football at a high enough level.

I guess if you asked me my top UH football games, the Garden State Bowl victory would make the top 50.

You both know Robert and Monte that the uta ncaa probations had a devastating impact on our program. Houston is not College Station or then Austin. U of H in Houston being a pro town has always had to fight these pro teams for fans support. It is the same for all major pro franchises cities. I will write it over and over again. Without these probations there is no telling how far and how many National Championships we would have won.
I am super excited with HCWF. He knows that he has to win now and be on top within two seasons. We do not have a choice. Media rights are up in a few years. It will be much harder to keep UH on the sideline again if we win. Fans will come. They came before. Fertitta/Ofheinz is the best example of all. Our BBall program is another prime example that we can be on top of Mont Rushmore.

This coming year is really important. After 2 losing seasons in a row in FB to begin our Big 12 history, we need to get back on the winning track. If CWF can win 7 or 8 games, everyone, including the national media, will recognize us as a big 12 contender. Fingers crossed.

Applewhite put our program on life support and Dana almost finished it off.

The damage those two did, especially Dana is hard to rectify.

I think that Tillman should have hired Todd Orlando at the time because even though he may not have been the best head coach candidate, the momentum from those 2015-2016 teams would have continued, since those defenses were the bread and butter of success in those seasons.

We have to, we will, we have no choice.

Disagree. Between Applewhite and Orlando, Applewhite was the correct head coach choice.

Hindsight is always 2020.

I didn’t believe that then and I don’t now.

No
Applewhite didn’t even deserve an interview.

That team was run by an OC that recently won a NC, Herman, and a stellar disciplined ball hawk defense.

There was a reason why Orlando was immediately named the interim to finish out the season
NOT Applewhite.

The truth is that Tilman botched the Kiffin hire, Orlando left, and to save face
we hired Applewhite and acted like it was the obvious continuation hire.

Those of us that were paying attention could see what was happening

That would have been a disaster. Worse than Applewhite
