FY 2015 R&D expenditures - UH ranks 123rd overall

Forgot to check this back in November, but FY15 R&D data was posted

UH continues to show nice gains in R&D Expenditures adding another $10M and ranking 123rd overall which is up from 126th last year. Always good when looking to join research based conferences (ahem…Pac 12) as it shows an ability and willingness to spend.

Full data: nsf.gov - NCSES Higher Education Research and Development: Fiscal Year 2015 - US National Science Foundation (NSF)

Where are the pac12 schools ranked?

Washington - 3
Stanford - 8
UCLA - 9
UC Berkeley - 23
USC - 28
Arizona - 34
Utah - 40
Arizona State - 48
Colorado - 53
Wazzu - 68
Oregon State - 86
Oregon - 156

We need to get to the $200 million average annually.

That’ll be tough, especially if the state cuts our budget as is expected. Really need to jump ahead of Tech though who’s barely in front of us.

We are 123rd in total research, slightly behind Tech.

However, that may be apples to oranges. Different schools define research differently.

The federal research total is apples to apples. Houston is 139 ($58M), well ahead of Texas Tech at 171 ($33M). Even so, our federal research has plateaued the last 5 years.

Looks like it’s going to take that medical school to make any real progress there.

Good point. UH also gets a lot more funding and spends more on non-farming/agriculture R&D; much more enticing to a mostly urban-based conference like the PAC12.
