Rebounding needs work…

Breaking in the engine, we will get rolling in time.

Outscored in the second half. There’s certainly things to improve on. Rebounding has to get better. I’m sure it will. Got the W.

Gotta use our height more effectively. Hold the ball high. Box out. Shoot over people. We actually have physical advantages for a change don’t let teams get scrappy on you.

Look, I spent the second half staying apprised of the Auburn score and lemme tell you, UH didn’t do all that bad tonight.

isn’t there always a random ranked team that struggles mightily in their buy game season opener though lol

Yeah but how often is that ranked team coached by a first-year head coach that was nepo’d into the job by his daddy’s sudden retirement?

Playing Hofstra close late in the game? Couldn’t be us :nail_care:

not often bc when was the last time a consistently good team suddenly gets coached by a nepo baby 6 weeks before the season

Kin folk Butch……no one else is flying from Pennsylvania to Houston to watch your team get beat.

Baylor beat UTRGV 96-81

There’s a lack of offensive efficiency without veterans Cryer and Roberts.
Will need time to overcome it.

Besides Sharp, roles arent really defined

Is Milos the #2 scorer, probably…but hes dealing with a lot of new pieces & trying to run offense

Tugler was rusty. Offensively, his footwork was off. Maybe im just thinking of those 5 Turnovers

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Definitely see Freshman type play and Tugler is very rusty offensively

They look a lot bigger also. Our two good bigs seems not enough

Lots of thoughts. Overall, this was a great place to start the season.
Context: this is the youngest team Sampson has ever coached.

  1. This is the first time I have watched UH and felt we won simply because of talent. If this was not five-stars vs future Deloitte interns, they might have beaten us. Usually we beat teams through our system, hustle, and work ethic. This time it just felt like we were too loaded vs a team who worked harder than us.

  2. The defensive potential is scary. Schematically, this was probably the worst defense I have seen from a Sampson team, yet the numbers were still great because the individual defensive talent is elite. There were missed rotations and open lanes, but length and recovery speed covered everything. When they learn the scheme, it will be special.

  3. Rebounding was poor, but that is easily fixable with this size.

  4. Ramon is a sixth-year senior on a roster that is mostly freshmen. He was the 11th man tonight. His place in the rotation seems clear, but his rebounding effort was outstanding.

  5. I think Sampson is rotating the last guard spot based on the matchup. In the scrimmage it was Mercy. This game it was Kord. Instead of playing 11 or 12 every night, he will probably play 9 or 10 and rotate players 8 through 12 depending on the opponent until someone separates.

  6. Tugler is offensively confident. Watch out.

  7. Sharp looks more agile than ever. A true three-level scorer. He had 24 points while only making one three. He does feels a little sped up right now, which might be what is affecting his shooting. Once the shot settles, he is an All-American candidate.

  8. Harwell defers too much, but it is game one. Hopefully he grows out of that and does not become another Ramon situation.

  9. Cenac looked amazing in the first 10 minutes and then disappeared. The potential is obvious. I also want to see him attack the rim more instead of settling as a spot-up shooter.

  10. This team will not be a great low-post scoring team, and that is okay. Baylor and Virginia both won titles without strong low-post scoring.

  11. The offense currently has no identity. It is very free-for all mayhem.

  12. Uzan has become more aggressive as a scorer, which is good, but his playmaking has not taken a leap. I would like to see him create more open threes for others.

  13. Everything above is fixable and will improve naturally with time. The one concern that may not fix itself is the backup center spot. You do not cure clumsiness just by playing more minutes. That is the weak point. Hopefully McFarland returns soon and meets the expectations.
