Game 15: #14 Texas Tech @ #7 Houston (W 69-65)

@pesik

Can we get your analysis on the game ? I’m sure the tech roster is different from last year and they gave us a run for our money last season. They were supposedly nation contenders according to national pundits.

Is it just me or does it sound like these guys don’t know much about Houston? They glazed Tech so much it felt they considered Houston the underdog.

I will give a short synopsis of the game.

The story of the game will be foul trouble.

  • I think if we keep JoJo in the game for more than 25 mins, we win the game, whether it turns into a shootout or a defensive matchup, as long as JoJo is on the floor.
  • On the other side, Tech is a 2.5 man show. If we get Toppin in early foul trouble (he got 4 foul a game over his last 5 games) we blow them out.

They are perceived as a national contender because they have 2 players who are in debates for First Team All American (Anderson, Toppin). But their roster is probably the most top heavy in the nation. After those guys, they have starters who would might not be rotation players on most Big 12 teams.

Toppin versus any big on our roster who is not JoJo heavily favors Tech. And unlike Arkansas, who was not a great shooting team, Texas Tech can really shoot (most of the roster are great at catch and shoot). Doubling or zoning will not work if our bigs are in foul trouble because they will find the open shooter. That is their clearest path to victory.

Other interesting things to note.

We have not stopped any top guard this year( Acuff, Dayday, Gillespie, etc.) Our perimeter defense has not been amazing this season, There is an argument that Anderson is better than all of those guys, so he could go off on us. This is less of an issue to me because every team with a heartbeat has scored at least 80 on Tech. In my opinion, even if Anderson goes off, we can outscore them in a shootout, especially if Toppin is kept in check.

Their power forward, LeJuan Watts, the .5 in my 2.5 man show, has insane highs and lows. He will have a 36 point game and then follow it up with a 4 point game. At 6’6, we have guys who can defend him. He might score some points because we are selling out on Toppin, but I do not think it will be enough to win. His main scoring comes from iso post ups, and we do not even allow that in our system.

assuming we get a home team whistle, i think we win

I don’t want to ruin it but here you go,
Houston looks strong, especially defensively and in transition, while Texas Tech relies heavily on star players like JT Toppin and Christian Anderson, boasting potent offense, especially inside and from three-point range, making for a contrasting but competitive matchup, with Houston often controlling tempo but Tech’s offensive firepower a constant threat.

The main thing to know about Tech is that they have several guys who can shoot the 3, Toppin will hurt us down low if we don’t have our trapping “A” game going and block out, and Christian Anderson will wear us out if our perimeter defense struggles.

Tech will space the floor like MTSU did, but they’ll do it with much better players, though they don’t have the size that MTSU did, so we SHOULD rebound better. We really need to force turnovers (they have several main guys that have that tendency) and minimize the open 3s.

Watts is a guy I would trap hard.

Last year’s UH would beat this year’s Tech team by 15-20, imo. Our low-post defense and rebounding will probably make this closer. Tech’s win vs Duke was huge for them, so they won’t lack confidence, and they won’t roll over even if we build a lead, so our guys have to keep the pedal down.

Love the Coach Sampson went old school for a minute in the interview and talked about Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati’s best basketball alumni. Robertson was one of the best all around guards in NBA history. Imagine Robertson on the same team as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Yes, they did win the NBA Championship that year.

The preview of the game makes no mention of a white out but does mention the free red t-shirt to the first 1,000 fans.

There is no white out. That was misinformation

The Pacific northwest is one of the most beautiful places in the continental U.S., but if you’re like me the lack of sunny days eliminates it from the list of places to live. My wife and I considered retiring up there, but I knew I would go crazy; I’m a summer guy!

I’ve lived there before… I loved it. My wife is the reason I’m not there right now ripping down a mountain side…

But at least it’s absolutely beautiful here right now…
