Game 29: #5 Houston vs Colorado - Saturday 11a.m. CST - ESPN2

Yeah, I think we have more of a confidence problem than a personnel problem. That can happen with a young team that hasn’t found its leaders yet.

Last year’s team had LJ, Francis, Robert and Coach Q to lean on. This year’s team is still searching, imo.

An 11:00 a.m. start time.

Expect a thin crowd at tip-off.

Please unpack this.

I get a 5 million dollar payout if Trum says GO COOGS in the state of the union tonight.

I plan to donate 2 million to our basketball program

Same crap tugler will do nothing but fouls Milo will dribble and dribble and than jack up a three. Sharp will jack up 3s

Is the lose of coach Q this huge and impactful?

This is what stands out most to me. Shots are just so flat, it’s real easy to go silent for 10 minutes this way. Frankly the defense is still working pretty well. Not last year or two good, but we graduated the big inside experience and have several new starters. These opponents have gone on 10-0 runs but it takes almost 10 minutes for them to do it. Just a few scores scattered through those stretches and each games complexion completely changes.

Uzan’s play kind of points this way. Q was a huge factor in getting him on track last year.

His role change is certainly a big factor, but I have to think that this would be going better for Uzan if Q was still here. Doesn’t really matter - time to figure it out.

We literally just played something equivalent to 3 multiple final four/final two games. Not ideal that we lost them all, but hopefully good growth and learning for our team.

I doubt we would have a stretch as brutal in the tourney.

This is subjective, but this team feels like it has the fewest DAWGS on it of any Sampson team. Uzan is just all around soft, Flemings is much more finesse/gets pushed around a lot with his frame, Cenac is soft on offense (seems like he’s always doing everything he can to avoid contact in the paint instead of just going up strong), and nobody off the bench strikes me as playing that particularly hard-nosed, diving all over the court, sacrificing their body style that Sampson’s players typically do (McCarty had a sequence in one play on Monday that inspired this post-- he was all over the place, hustling like his life depended on it, and it made me think-- damn, we used to have guys doing stuff like this on almost every play with previous UH teams.)

To my eye, it’s just Sharp and Jojo keeping that spirit alive this season (and sort of Harwell and McCarty, at times) whereas last year we had Mylik, Sharp, Cryer, Roberts, Francis, Jojo all playing with that extreme, borderline reckless effort for 40 straight every night. And think back to guys like Shead, Chaney, Jarreau… This team just seems so damn mild-mannered compared to the fiery competitors we used to always have.

I also find it odd with as less physical as this team strikes me this year, we are somehow fouling way more than previous seasons. We just seem comparatively listless and flat-footed on defense compared to the relentless swarm of our past defenses.

I dunno, this is just a lazy sh*tpost, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed anything similar with regard to our effort, particularly on defense. Is it just that we are a less well-oiled machine with all the new/young guys and so our defense is less tight, leading to confusion that looks like less intense effort?

We went from blue collar 3 stars to white collar 5 star type of team. Miss the chip on our shoulder and dawgs. Enforcer type Rodman.

you’re right about this years team being mild mannered for our standards but most of the rest is just down to not being as well of an oiled machine like last year

I know he didn’t score a lot, but I was impressed with the way he played Monday night. 7 rebounds (2 offensive) and 2 steals.

I don’t think the problem is with our freshman 5 stars not busting their asses so much as our returners not leading the way.

Complacency is the breeding ground for mediocrity. Not that anyone is settling for mediocrity. It just feels like some don’t have the same hunger.

I agree. Would be great to get that kind of game from him every time off the bench. His effort reminded me a lot of Wilson

It is almost like you’re having an argument with yourself? LOL.

I agree with y’all McCartney had great energy. It was very opportunistic in some of its plays!

And McCarty, too. McCartney’s getting a little old for this stuff. :slightly_smiling_face:
