Game 33: #17 BYU vs #2 Houston; Friday - Big XII Tournament (W 74-54)

Playing the 2nd string against a hot team is not a good way to cinch a game and move to the championship game.

I don’t go for the idea of not giving it our all to win the B12 tourney. If you play a game, you play to win.

I assumed it was something along those lines.

But that just doesn’t add up to me at all.

If 40 extra minutes is a concern, why wouldn’t that be true tomorrow too (ie today’s game)?

I understand the gist of the idea behind those thoughts (particularly maintaining a seeding thing) today, where it that is less of a concern tomorrow.

But…in no universe can I force myself to PREFER a loss tomorrow OVER a loss on Saturday.

To each his own I guess.

my mindset is if we win tomorrow and give up that extra day of rest we might as well secure the double this time unlike last year

I hear ya, but not for me.

My overriding thought whenver you go into a “might as well win” approach…is that it clearly applies to ALL GAMES (no cherry picking required). To me…probably altruistic…but if Saturday doesn’t matter, tomorrow can’t either. I.e. we’ll choose to ONLY try to score in the odd numbered minutes of the game, but not the even minutes. It doesn’t fit my mindset once the opening tip goes up.

Again, to each their own.

If they’ll give Mercy the ball. Let the kid air it out one half. Today it was like keep away.

You don’t think Sampson and the players will take the game seriously?

Nice! Slam it on the board Mercy!

The last time Mercy played was almost a month ago, he’s played more than 5 min in a Big12 game once, when we were up 40 on Utah. He played 10 minutes tonight.

That doesn’t mean they are not taking it seriously. They want to keep guys fresh. Also, Uzan went to the bench early with fouls. Share was in full trouble throughout the game.

If we were taking it seriously Mercy wouldn’t have played.

I thought he was saying you need to win because the final will likely be against Tech and who wants to lose to those guys lol

Maybe “seriously” is the wrong word. But we aren’t playing these game like a conference regular season game, even when we already had the conference wrapped up.

Right. Because we’re not in conference play. We trying to play three games in three days for another championship.

I think this win locks us up as the Midwest 1. That’s what mattered today. Obviously J’Wan has no business playing tomorrow, everyone in the top 7 should be getting lots and lots of breathers with Wilson, Mercy, Jefferson, and big Ced getting plenty of time.

Well, dang, they may as well have not flown over there. Stay home and rest and practice at Fertitta.

Wouldn’t have hurt my feelings, but we had to win this game to finalize the one seed. Mission Accomplished

They aren’t allowed to do that or I’d be all for it, CKS even talked about how little this matters and it’s just to make the conference money.

Okay. Sampson plays to win when he is able to. If we make the championship, I wouldn’t be surprised to see J’wan play.

Sampson has also said “They keep score, right?”
