Game Thoughts After the Loss

Something I realized when I went back to watch some of the game again. We didn’t just go to Roberts once with the game on the line, we did it twice. Once at the end of regulation where the shot got swatted away and then in OT where he got swarmed by the defense and travelled. Neither time did we even get a decent look. Meanwhile Tech down 1 with less than 20 seconds to go drove right down our court and easily drew a foul and went to the line

So many open looks standing on the 3 pt line while J’Wan dribbles into trouble…

Yes his defense is not great is definitely part of the problem, he will come around

Three games, two on the road, likely took a toll as legs and free throw misses and Sharp’s injury had limited time to recover.

Excellent analysis. Tech converted 3’s when we 1) doubled the ball, 2) they passed out of it 3) Tech’s open player nailed the 3, 4) we did not adjust out the trapping defense. Our shots did not go in like they typically do at home and Tech shot lights out. On defense, Tech boxed out underneath. There were plenty of times I saw 2 Tech players underneath to our 1. Lastly, the best way to quiet their fans is to beat them and badly (Captain Obvious).

The biggest question mark for me was why wasn’t Milos exploiting his 6’4” frame when being guarded by 5’9” Elijah Hawkins? I can only remember Milos shooting over him once. Milos could have dominated this game in the midrange if he wanted to.

How many times are going to lose games because we can’t make free throws? We were down one point because Robert’s missed free throw could have seal the game Milo’s free throw but he choke at the line. Then instead of fouling they let him shoot 3 pointer to tie the game, that’s coaching mistake.

I’ve never been real fond of Sampson’s end game strategy offense or defense more often than not starting back at the Michigan fiasco, then running shot clock down with a lead and there’s like 8 minutes left, just run the offense and bury them, just stuff like that is aggravating

The primary benefit of playing a team like Tech is we should be ready if we face a team like them in the tournament; IOW a team like Alabama. Teams like that seem to be immune to our lock down defense.

Instead he had his worst game in a while in terms of turning the ball over. I believe he had four turnovers. They need to address this issue as Uzan was clearly uncomfortable at times in this matchup.

Once our killer defense doesn’t kill we always have problems.

Like others I say that Miller should have played. He does not because of defense weakness. But our defense was not working anyway.

We need scoring when playing these good teams.

When we go to Tucson our defense will be ineffective. We must outscore them. And there will be other teams like that, especially in March Madness.

Milos Uzan has played in 21 game and has only attempted 20 free throws. He averages less than 1 free throw attempt a game how is that possible for a starting point guard? He has more turnovers on the season than free throw attempts. How does Mercy Miller who hardly plays have more free throw attempts than Uzan? We have to start going at defenders and drawing contact specifically at the end of games when both teams are in the bonus that is what’s killing us and why we have lost 3 out of 4 overtime games.

That’s one of the dumbest takes you could ever have with Milos not starting. Don’t really say negative on here but that is super dumb. Milos does not turn the ball over - he is very careful with the ball. We can’t beat ourselves if we don’t turn the ball over. Coach preaches this.

Mylik had 2 TOs in ONE SEQUENCE versus ball pressure. Defenses would eat Mylik alive. Milos stabilizes this unit, hence why he’s having the highest +/- of the team the past couple games.

Mylik is a good off the ball person but there is a reason he’s on the bench. Mylik is awesome in his role - and so is Milos.

The comments about Uzan seem to be correct.

Sampson has tried to make him into a killer defender. While doing so his Offense has diminished.

This is a flaw that will be attacked in March Madness. Shead was terrific at going to the basket, hitting shots, and drawing fouls.

Uzan is not. Our last play vs Tech could have seen Uzan, or Cryer, going to the basket. Tech could not foul as that would put them on the FT line.

Not trusting then Sampson goes to Roberts who had a severe ankle injury. Roberts proceeded to fall down.

Both Wilson and Miller need to play more. They can score. At the end of a close game you might play Tugler, Wilson, Miller, Cryer, and Sharp. Gives you 4 shooters. And a guy to whom you can launch the lob.

This lack of scoring gets us knocked out of March Madness.

The loss itself doesn’t bother as much as the fact we seem to be limited by injuries…again. Taking two out of the last three isn’t a bad result, and the Coogs certainly control their own destiny in the Big 12 race, but I’m worried that Sharp and Roberts aren’t going to be near 100% at any point in the season. Injuries are part of the game, but we need our key players operating at peak level to make a deep tournament run.

I think the there was just so many distractions before the game, with the jerseys, the Chaney retirement jersey that the focus wasn’t all there. They still only lost by one in overtime. I think that they will win in Lubbock.

A loss because of distractions of blue jerseys and Don Chaney? If true, this team is not as good as I thought. I don’t think the jerseys or Chaney were a factor at all for the loss.

I think they very much were. Too much hoopla going on in the building in a key game against a very good team after a long week.

While I’m irritated as Hell, UH will benefit from the loss. UH has guys injured that were not their usual selves, and in time that will correct itself when they get well. What I saw was 10-11 players out there that could start for other teams, and every one of them contributed. The refs screwing Tech with that absurd technical blew up right in our faces and probably cost us that game. IMO that was a tournament game and we will learn a lot from that loss.

What’s Miller shooting splits this season? I’m curious
