They had speed rushers and he stepped up in the pocket. Had he rolled out, he’d get sacked repearedly
Ah, that explains it. I kept wondering why he wasn’t moving around more.
Did Demetrius Dean get any snaps on the OL? I was hoping he’d be able to contribute as a true freshman.
I agree with you and I did some research into why? -
Found that SFA’s DC Mike Mutz
was on Willie Fritz’s coaching staff at:
Tulane
Georgia Southern
Sam Houston
as a LB coach and he coached with Fritz for 10 years.
Obviously he knows Willie and Slade Nagel’s offense extremely well.
I think that explains why we had trouble against SFA’s defensive scheme.
Shouldn’t that also mean that Willie knows his defense really well?
Yep, and Young looked like he had a step or so on the coverage. CW just over threw Young.
Koby is going to be very good in time…book it…
Wait a minute. I’ve heard on this board that CWF adjusts his scheme to fit his players. Both things can’t be true at the same time. Which is it?
I mean, both things can be true; it’s possible that Fritz adjusts his scheme to fit his players’ talents, but Mutz has worked with Willie enough to understand how his thought process works and what adjustments he’s going to make given what he’s seen on film from the guys that Fritz has. Of course, what I’ve just described could better be termed as Fritz getting outcoached, but it’s certainly a possibility.
I rewatched the game and when SFA LOADED up the LOS, and had the numbers, we just ran the same play we called. Often, there were 6+ defenders to block on the line at the snap.
But overall, when our Oline was one on one with their man, they pushed them around. I think the middle crossing routes would be effective.
They made a comment on TV that Naigle thought that the SFA defensible was “pretty good”! Goes to your point about the speed rusher!
Rice PreGame will be created soon as TCU vs UNC game ends
Or you can add to this thread
The pre game usually turns into the game thread
Not last year. We always used the Can we Beat… for pregame and then made an official game thread on the day of the game
Good stuff.
Most people forget that the R&S was supported by a great defense in 1988 and 1989.
Yeoman had recruited very well on defense and Pardees staff coached them up.
I laugh at all those today who claim you need a ball control offense to rest your defense !!
In those years, we could score in 2 minutes, the defense took the field , stopped the other team…… we got the ball back, rinse and repeat.
…and probably the most important of this is that we were on probation. Just God knows how Nationally dominant we would have been if we had been able to fully recruit. The uta/ncaa probations had two goals in mind. Put us in the ditch and kill any momentum that could have galvanized and entire region…pretty much like Miami did in the 80’s with multiple National Championships.
UH was a Miami in the making until the uta/ncaa probations came.
