Gavin Newsome may block UCLA to B1G

Wait? There are casinos in San Jose? How did I miss this? #missedopportunity

I made lots of trips there and have a gambling “fascination” yet had no idea there were casinos in town.

Pretty sure it was this casino

Being “well connected” beats having a brain.

These threads get off the rails. It appears Newsom has no executive power to block UCLA, though the BOR is hearing people yelling. Someone says Newsom was recalled anyways, implying he’s not going to be in office much longer, even though he beat the recall and will be re-elected handily for another term.

On topic - What can Newsom do to stop the UCLA move? Nobody seems to know without lawyers making a deep dive. Will making a show of outrage and surprise suffice? That seems so, and is what I alluded to earlier. UCLA will be moving to the Big Ten.

But you got your dig in. Nice.

Sounds “snazzy”

I’m not bougie
 It wasn’t bad
Had a sports bar and black jack tables
 Worked for me.

I was at the game too with someone that knew everything about U of H and the game of the century. He is a UCLA alum. Your point is excellent because it clearly illustrates how some can be affected by the media never talking about a program for decades. Putting us in the ditch for decades has some REAL consequences.
newsome is a tool feigning to pretend he is badly hurt, offended, outraged by UCLA’s and yes even USC.
He is disconnected from his constituents. His actions speaks volume on how he is involved.

I was laughing at their use of the word to describe their casino. Hadn’t heard “snazzy” in a while.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

“I was skeptical when I heard politicians might get involved and try to block UCLA’s departure to the Big Ten Conference. But the more I talk with lawmakers, the more I believe the Bruins’ biggest athletic battle this season will take place in Sacramento”

“A subsidy would be an interesting compromise. It would penalize UCLA and bolster Cal, but it wouldn’t ease the anxiety of the bondholders of the UC system. They might still litigate”

So let me get this right, Cal wants to act like they have been hurt by UCLA’s decision but they have been charter members of a conference that has actively kept San Diego State and Fresno State out. They were perfectly ok in hurting other California state schools.

I don’t remember Cal ever offering to split their Pac 12 revenue with anyone.

Bondholders may come after’em, Horse of different color. If it goes to that. Including subsidizing CAL. It’s could be a mess. I got my popcorn

It’s that whole R1 restriction I keep talking about.

For some reason, people here think that that isn’t a thing with the PAC.

IT IS!!!

But if we successfully raid the PAC, then they may have no choice.

Sounds familiar doesn’t it.

Canzano seems very committed to optimistic spin with regard to the Pac-12. He’s always been extremely bullish on Pac-12’s leverage vs the Big 12, for example. I think this is a manifestation of that. Oregon and/or the Pac-12 is better off if UCLA doesn’t go*, so he makes UCLA leaving sound less assured (and throws in some sour grapes about how they’re probably going to hate the Big Ten).

    • If UCLA doesn’t go, maybe Oregon does. But even if Stanford gets the spot and Oregon is still left behind the Pac-12 benefits from that tradeoff and it improves the TV deal and the chances of conference survival.

Yes it does. That is why we will be ok through all of these machinations because we know the cardinal rules of all of this. Look out for yourself, nothing is forever and don’t trust anyone.

From what I read in the various articles, Newsome is ticked off that they weren’t given a heads up beforehand. He found out with the rest of us. Think of UH-V joining the SEC and not giving Tillman a heads up first. The stakes are bigger here and I don’t think Newsome is going to do anything. However, if the CA legislature gets involved and come up with something like Cal and UCLA have to be in the same conference, that’s a different animal.
