Hey Law, your “It’s about the brand, not the market” UCLA made the list as WORST FAN ENGAGEMENT!
I thought they were P2 worthy???
Academics…
I’ve always liked the Wyoming uniforms.
Can confirm you will regularly see police tape, homeless, and prostitutes on the campus of New Mexico
They are.
Their fan engagement may be weak…BUT…when you consider that together with USC, they represented 40% of the PAC’s media value…they were obviously a HUGE brand, money wise.
So yeah…definitely P2 worthy.
What I like is how either Georgetown or Gonzaga (which bulldog is that?) is worst on NIL. I’m guessing Stanford won’t be far behind, given that the geeks, dweebs, dorks, nerds, and spazzes that attend that school most likely don’t care enough about football, no matter how much money they may make, to fund the NIL honey pot.
Bottom line: ACADEMICS DON’T DRIVE THIS!!!
That’s Butler.
Ah, I see.
I guess those small private schools can’t get the funds together!
Man…you talk out of both sides of your mouth.
The PAC had NO value, hence no TV deal, BUT UCLA is part of the 40% of a value-less conference.
Football drives the bus yet…UCLA was added for it’s BASKETBALL brand…not it’s Football brand.
In the year UCLA received a B1G 10 invite they were averaging a little over what UH averaged last season.
If Notre Dame wants Stanford to join them in the B1G as a PACKAGE DEAL…guess who is getting an invitation to the B1G…Stanford!
Another illogical take of yours…
Duke (great basketball + crappy football) is a great add, as a storied program, however UCONN (great basketball + crappy basketball) is not DESPITE having more total National Championships and MORE recent National Championships than Duke and they are NOT even finished adding to their resume!
FIFY.
UCLA’s football attendance may not be the best, but they had media value. As I said, USC and UCLA alone represented 40% of the PAC’s media value according to most sources.
Once they were gone, I knew it was over.
And trust me. ND doesn’t care enough about Stanford to do such a thing. That’s a nice hypo, but not a realistic one. It’s an academic question at best.
Stanford has VERY LOW media value. Even the ACC only wanted them at 30%.
The B1G and Big 12 both didn’t want them at all. That tells you all that you need to know about their brand/media value.
I’m not sure why you and 3rdWard seem to think that the B1G would ever make such a “what if we agree to invite Stanford along with you, if that’ll convince you to join” offer. They want ND, obviously, but they do NOT want ND enough to bring in a parasite like Stanford along with them.
The B1G wants ADDITIVE brands like ND, NOT dilutive brands like Stanford. Adding a parasite like Stanford would, in effect, “cancel out” much of the value of adding ND.
That’s why thinking that Stanford has value on that basis is some really stupid thinking.
I have FIVE cousins who are ND graduates, and I can tell you straight up that none of them give a crap about Stanford as a ND rival. It’s all about USC, Michigan, Michigan State, etc.
ND doesn’t care enough about Stanford to make that a condition of realignment, and obviously the B1G already has enough parasites, so they won’t offer to take another one just to cancel out the value of the addition of a big brand like ND.
The B1G is like any other fraternity. Fraternities don’t give bids to a cool guy’s dorky annoying friend just so they can get a pledge from the cool guy. They simply ignore the dorky guy altogether (or blackball him) and only give a bid to the cool guy. If the cool guy won’t join because his dorky friend wasn’t invited, then c’est la vie. That frat will simply say…“suit yourself” and move on without them. In other words, the dorky friend doesn’t have any “value” to the fraternity, and as such, the fraternity will ignore him.
The same dynamic applies here to your hypo. You seem convinced that the B1G might offer a bid to the dorky guy (Stanford) just to get the cool guy (ND). Never happens in any other fraternity, and given that, won’t/wouldn’t happen in the B1G fraternity either.
I like New Balance.
Notre Dame will never join the BIG, not ever…Notre Dame doesnt forget and they dont forgive, either…They have even moved away from playing BIG teams, after enjoying decades of beating them…One game last year, one game this year instead of the 3 or 4 ND always played…ACC is NDs conference now, playing 5 ACC teams last year, and 4 this year…All other ND sports affiliate with ACC…it will be interesting to see how influential ND will be to help ACC with their current problems…
I won’t say they’ll never join.
But people saying they’d be more likely to join if Stanford were invited are being stupid. Stanford doesn’t matter that much to ND.
Hell, ND’s biggest rival has always been USC.
If USC being in the B1G isn’t enough to induce ND to join, then I can’t imagine why anyone would think that a far lesser rival like Stanford would have that effect.
Stanford has NO “value” in that regard, no matter what 1927 and 3rdWard would like to believe.
UCLA has an exceptional campus and academics. My youngest and I just got back from visiting and he loves UCLA. My youngest has been getting a lot of attention because of his academics and grades and UCLA and Cal Berkley are tied for best public university in the nation for academics. Oddly enough, my son has not gotten a letter from UH after getting over 250 letters from colleges all over the country.
Oh yeah.
To me, UCLA is the best existing model for what an urban public research university should be.
98% of its true freshmen live on campus, even without a mandate!
Very much a “destination” school!
At least they don’t let Cal bully them around like how UT does with its satellite schools.
If a UTSA, UTEP, etc were to join a P5, I bet UT will shut it down.
I’m surprised there was no push back from Cal when the announcement of UCLA to the Big 10 was made.
There are some schools that are worth the premium price, regardless of the current status of their football program.
I’m talking schools like UCLA, USC, Florida, Notre Dame, etc…
Even Texas was in a rut for almost an entire decade, and they are still a premier brand that would get full shares in any conference. They could go winless multiple seasons and still justify a big value.
We visited two weeks ago and my son wants to apply. We have an east coast trip in third week of July, so still looking at schools but UCLA made a great impression…the 70 degree weather (and it also felt like 70, unlike Houston that was 90 and felt like 102 on the same day as I compered) was outstanding.
Now that’s a sorority house!!!
finally, a negative list that we are not on!
