Hantavirus cruise

This story just keeps getting more terrible. The Canary Islands won’t allow them to dock because of the apparent biohazard risk. Nightmare fuel for cruisers.

The cruise industry in general is a terrible industry.

Why so many people embark on these hell holes is beyond me…

I wasn’t a cruise person until l had a kid. Our Alaskan cruise was one of the highlights of our lives. Got to see amazing things. Glaciers calving, etc.

But they are a petri dish.

I’ve been on two cruises, both pre-Covid. Always had a great time. I do know of someone who was on one of the Carnival cruises that had major engine failures or whatever it was but that was maybe 8-10 years ago and I don’t think that soured them on cruises. Other than generally being trapped on board, I don’t see it much different than spending time in any highly concentrated tourist spot.

I took my first cruise in August as part of a land and sea package to Alaska. It was a blast.

Just returned from a cruise of the Greek Islands. Also, a great trip.

Hellholes? Naw brah

We are going on an Alaskan cruise in June. CAN’T WAIT!!!

I went on a cruise (I was forced to) for a family reunion like 10 years ago, I don’t remember which line it was

But it just reeks of labor exploitation and environmental degradation, on top of yes feeling trapped in a boat. I just remember the workers (mostly from the Philippines I think) looked absolutely miserable, and it made it hard for me to even pretend to enjoy it.

I am fairly radical in my takes in regards to resort-style anything, so yeah that’s just my honesty. I’ve been to Cabo twice and Cancun once, hated both of them.

But I understand it’s a bargain for the masses. Most people cannot go on eco-friendly, non-exploitative trips because it’s too expensive.

Sad world we live in.

My advice is book excursions out of the port towns. The towns are so overrun by people it’s like Time Square. They just doubled the size of the Princess boat so even more people overwhelming thos little towns

No one seemed miserable on mine, but I know that the workers from the Philippines were for sure poor and likely couldn’t earn what they do on the cruise at home either. Other workers were from all over, UK, former USSR countries, USA, etc. I’ve heard there is high retention rates too so, they are coming back for more. Not saying that necessarily makes it right but I bet a lot of them see (even with extreme work schedules) it as improving their family’s lives.

Is there really such a thing as “eco-friendly” if you have to fly/drive/boat to the destination?

By the way, I understand why you don’t like them and I’m not saying you should like them or go on any of those trips or locations. Vote with your dollars for sure.

You sound like buckets of fun on vacations

True story. I was on a carnival cruise and we departed the evening of the national championship game. I think Butler was playing Duke. I was walking around the ship and we walked by this restaurant bar kind of thing and they had the game on. My daughter and I sat down and my daughter asked who we were rooting for. I told her Butler and pointed out they were in black jerseys. There were these two black families on the cruise together and they invited my daughter and I to sit with them because it was hard for my daughter to see. She was five at the time. The grandmother was talking to my daughter and asked, “who are you for, baby?”

My daughter said, “the black guys.” One of the uncles said, “you hear that?! She’s for the black guys!!”

A big roar went up and both families were laughing and giving my daughter high-fives. We ended up taking pictures and spending a fun evening together. Great memories.

That sounds like a scene from an Eddie Murphy movie.

Nice work introducing your kindergartener to the bar scene, too.

The only cruise I’ve been on was a Norwegian deal that island-hopped the Hawaiian islands. We mostly sailed at night and landed in a different port every morning. When we did eat or do on-board stuff, the place was immaculately clean and the food was fantastic.
