Happy Birthday John Jenkins

Boy did they.

The whole Jenkins thing wasn’t that bad in my opinion for what he did to get fired. He had a few practices with some lightning and boobs spliced in to keep players interested . Looking back now, other coaches grabbed coeds etc . It’s all about timing. Jim Morrison got banned for saying “higher” in that Ed Sullivan show for ex. In the 60s and now Rock n roll is way worse with lyrics.

It was simply poor timing bc lightning and boobs would be ok now lol

We also have to wonder if we didn’t schedule Miami when they were an nfl team , if we could have recovered bc that Miami game blew the myth . We were good but Miami was simply a beast that killed any team in their way. College football as to who is good or great does have that “myth” line built in bc no one can play all the great teams. Seems like after that Miami game that era ended. Miami destroyed Texas and many other teams. Those Miami teams were like playing an nfl team which was unfair.

Pardee made the Pardee era as he hired Jenkins and a great defensive staff.

Bud Adams ruined the Pardee era.

I love Mr. Pardee. Did Mr. Pardee have a 10-1 season"
The answer will be no.
Did Mr. Pardee have “better pool of players”
The answer will be yes since he basically started the probation. Mr. Jenkins finished that probation.

100% with you. The Jenkins hate made no sense then and makes even less sense today.
Mr. John Jenkins Run and Shoot version changed college football and the nfl. Many pro teams used the Run and shoot plays. The Patriots did it successfully.

I don’t hate Jenkins. I think he was an offensive genius, and I appreciate what he did for UH. The 10-1 team was a good one, not great, at least offensively. I’m only saying that team wasn’t of the same quality as some of our other teams. It would arguably be one of our all-time ten best teams, but if so it would rank around #10.

As I said, ONE HIT WONDER.

His other two teams had losing seasons.

Yes, I agree. At the time he probably needed to go, but given the two coaches who replaced him it might have been better had he stayed.

ya think?

No doubt he was better than Helton and Dimel.

Hard to be worse!

UH’s AD at the time was Bill Carr. No one would ever use Bill Carr and dynamic is the same sentence.

Not sure I agree with that. Once everyone caught up with run and shoot. I think John Jenkins was a very good office coordinator, but not really head coach material.

Randy, you know that Mr. Pardee was on probation then that probation went to Mr. John Jenkins. Speak about a challenge to coach a power conference team and with a limited roster. to accomplish a 10-1 season with I mentioned earlier is simply outstanding. The following years while still on probation and with a limited roster NO other coaches could have done better.
Some of you fail to mention, realize or don’t want to acknowledge it. Mr. Jenkins stayed at U of H. You can bet Mr. Pardee wanted him with the Oilers. He decided to stay. Hats off to Mr. Jenkins. After Mr. Yeoman he is my favorite head coach.

Great site:

Another good article:

Now read some of these stats. Understand that we were on probation. Again there is no telling how high we could have gone. How many National championships we could have if we had not been on probation?
Many coaches were put off by Mr. Jenkins. An innovator always disturbs the status quo or the "good old boys network.

From the LA Times:

Now for every football coach out there. Enjoy. I absolutely love that one.

Some of you can “belittle” Coach Jenkins all you want. Know this.
There are three UH Head Coaches known around the country, three. They are.
Mr. Yeoman for the Veer
Mr. Lewis for Phi Slama Jama
Mr. Jenkins for the Run N Shoot

Oh by the way for all the naysayers. The three have two things in common. UH and a distinctive offense. The three are still in use today with a their own version. History it is. No other UH coaches can make that statement.

John and his wife Karen were friends back when he was with UH. My wife and I knew Karen better than John (his face was always in a notebook always related to football). We enjoyed getting to hang with them (both of us being UH grads). It was an honor to me to get to build their new home for them. Thank you UH for the BS Civil / Construction Management degree.

When he wasn’t buried in football and joined the conversation he was funny and had a good wit. His wife Karen was social sweetheart and good looking too (I believe she was a former Miss Tennessee). I was really glad for those times and their company. I got to see how college football works outside of the bleachers. We got to go and sit with Karen at a few away games.

Having turned 73 myself, I hope John and Karen are living lives that feel good to them these days.

Thank you Ej for contributing to this thread. The 1989 and 1990 seasons were historical for me. To even question the lasting effects that probation and a reduced roster meant is mind boggling to me. Some of us that went to school at that time remember all too well how our then administration wanted to kill our football program. We were that close to it.
Our then administration did not see sports as a priority like Mr. Khator sees it today. The uta ncaa infused probation had another major impact, historical impact on our sports program. We did not build new facilities. We did not even maintain them. Again our then administration did not want to have anything to do with sports.

What alot of people don’t know is after Jenkin’s fairly abrupt departure during the mini scandal, (Stephen Staggs, boobs) every last video tape, notebook, manuscript, diagram and anything related to the Run and Shoot mysteriously dissappeared from the football office and were never located. They ended up at another SWC school that will go unmentioned, but the coordinators there were never able to completely unravel the schemes or exactly what Jenkins was doing.

How do you know that?
Departure? He was sacked like he had stolen grandmas bank account. What you should point out is how destructive and despicable our administration was then. They hated sports with all of their directional powers. The football program was saved at the last minute because WE/students found out what their intentions were.
Without Mr. John Jenkins there is no Houston Gamblers with the best offense ever. More than likely there is no Mr. Pardee at UH then to the Oilers.
Give credit where credit is due…OVER DUE.

Of course we credit him for being an offensive genius.

But in the end, he had two losing seasons out of three and only finished 18-15 overall at UH.

Kinda hard to jump up and down and say “Yippee Yippee” over that.

When did you attend UH law?
Did you attend U of H during the 80’s and early 90’s?
If you did not you have no clues about one if not the worst sport period in our history. I am not going to argue about Illinois, your school because I know nothing about it. The students that lived that period know what I am talking about it. You obviously can’t if you did not live it.
