Forget all of that. Were you at UH or not during that time? The question is not about you but it is about how this specific time period was a major turn in our “sports history” Thank you for clarifying.
I disagree that matters or devalues my input and don’t need to forget my comments. I can have the discussion either way.
Why can’t you answer? Yes or no? I am telling you this time period for our sports program was unlike any other.
We/fans went to the admin building begging them to keep our football program. Their attitude was despicable. They basically told us to f off.
HC John Jenkins was black balled after that time.
I understand your point. But don’t think it impacts the value of my input. You disagree and that’s fine.
When did you start and when did you graduate?
I have had various experiences with our sports program over the years. This was by far the lowest.
HC John Jenkins was given a raw deal, despicable raw deal.
It doesn’t matter. Stop asking.
Off course it matters. We/ students/pro sports students fought for this.
I disagree. You can keep asking but I’ve given my view on it.
…and you won’t answer a basic historical question that 100% matters. You can’t give an opinion from afar if you did not live it.
You can have a “disconected/uninformed” opinion. That’s about it.
I can give my opinion and did. You don’t have to value it. That’s fine.
Thank you again for opening this thread.
Hopefully one day HC John Jenkins will be given his due respect.
And I haven’t even been critical of Jenkins. He did some good things here and glad he was part of our program.
He’s been a good fan and follower subsequently too.
He saved our foitball program. Then he was rail roaded by some. Thank god for Briles too. These two HC’s are why we even play football today.
I attended 1990 UH games, including the UT game in Austin.
It is my opinion that our program would have been better from 1993-2002 with Jenkins.
The 7 year Helton era was Almost mentally ill. His best record was 7-4. His only Bowl game saw Syracuse run all over us.
Dimel was 0-11 one season. Only UH Coach, ever,to go winless.
Jenkins had no Defense, and possibly could not spell the word, but he outscored opponents. Same as did Art Briles.
Jenkins was not on TV and missed 15 scholarships. Once he got back on TV and had a full roster he probably wins more games than did Helton.
We were left out of Big 12 expansion after 1995. Are we left out if we had returned to winning, to running up 700 yards of Total Offense?
Thank you for posting. These were crazy times. Can you imagine if HC John Jenkins had followed HC Pardee with the Oilers?
Don’t recall for sure, but I remember Jenkins signed a big class in 1991, so I don’t think the program suffered much from some recruiting violations, which only limited the team to 15 scholarships in February of 1989. Those true freshmen would have contributed very little to the ‘90 team. And another thing: UH got probation because we were paying players in the mid-80s. We deserved it.
I can’t remember either but everything was aganst him. Besides all of that HE, HC John Jenkins stayed…many would have left in a heart beat.
What do you mean we deserved it?
Because uta had people working inside the ncaa?
uta did the exact same thing like every power conference programs Nationwide. They got a slap on the wrist. I can’t believe what I am reading.
We basically got just a step below the death penalty that smu got.
“We deserved it” UNBELIEVABLE.
Another issue was that alot of Jenkin’s recruits failed to qualify. Padree & Jenkins built those successful squads with JUCO heavy talent. One highy touted class under Jenkins turned out to be pretty much a bust after all was said and done.
and think about trying to recruit while you are on probation…if it happened today we had be lucky to have a squad.
10-1 is all more impressive.
