Heard on the Herd

They were talking about North Carolina and Clemson going to the SEC. I got in on the tail end of the conversation and don’t know if it’s getting done or they were just predicting.

Damn Google AI says they’re joining in 2028.

Edit, it’s sourcing Facebook lol

UNC is a safe bet.

Who their realignment partner will be is up for debate.

It’s either FSU, Clemson, or UVA. (I’m leaning towards UVA or Clemson)

Yormark needs to snag FSU and maybe Ga Tech or Miami
Maybe Pitt as well since it’s close to cinci

Paul Finebaum thinks UNC and Virginia are the safest bets to join the SEC. If that happens, the ACC teams of FSU, Clemson, VT, SMU, Miami, and Pitt would be looking for a new home and the B1G doesn’t seem to be wanting them.

The Herd said that if the SEC absorbs 2 of the ACC teams, then the B1G would try to get ND whose ACC opposition would be too watered down. I buy the ND to the B1G scenario because ND’s available competition would be too weak.

Now, would the B12 be able to pick off a couple of the remaining ACC teams? If so, what would be the favorites?

FSU Clemson, if not then Louisville Miami, if not then some combo VT GT NCSt. If 4 then FSU or Miami, Clemson, Louisville, VT or NCSt

Why does the SEC need to add teams?

I don’t think FSU joins the Big 12 without Clemson. I think FSU would go independent at that point.

But I also don’t see why SEC would have interest in Clemson.

It’s another big dog that everyone will have to worry about, and they already have a pooper with the Gamecocks, who has a good season every now and again.

I think the SEC has too many big dogs already, and they should add team that round the conference holistically with UNC & UVA (Basketball, Academics, Location/Travel)

Snagging both Miami and FSU would put 3 teams in Florida, but the B12 has 4 teams in Texas. So, would the non-Texas B12 teams want another Texas team in SMU? Or would the other Texas B12 teams want SMU?

Pitt and VT would be close teams for Cincinnati and WVU.

How many teams do we want? The SEC currently has 16 teams, if they add Virginia and UNC that would be 18, would they want any more? The B1g currently has 14 teams, would they want as many as 18?

There’s a ton of variables to figure out.

CFP.

That’s why.

Having teams that don’t threaten an established hierarcy (UNC/UVA) means more secure bids for the CFP.

In other words, Bama can schedule UNC or UVA interchangeably every year instead of having to play against Texas, OU, Georgia etc…

They don’t need to add any more teams, and to be clear, I don’t even know if they really want to add more teams. This may only be fodder for the media to gain views or readers.

But, they may want to to gain viewership and pre-empt the B1G. Greed seems to be the motivating factor in collegiate athletics.

TV inventory

Not sure why having 3 Florida schools means the Big 12 needs a 5th Texas school.

If both B1G and SEC went to 18, I think 18 would be a good goal for the Big 12. I would think one in Florida and one a little further up the coast (VT, NC State) would give the best balance for growth in media.

I doubt the B12 wants SMU, especially the 4 current Texas members. At 16 teams already, 18 would be pushing it to the limits unless we went to 20 with divisions.

I don’t think SMU is needed when we already have TCU, but that being said…

The Big 12’s strength really lays in scale and not brands, which is why it’s important if the following happens.

  • SEC: Florida Gators alone are are sufficient, and Texas/Texas A&M essentially covers grounds for the entire state of Texas
  • Big 12: FSU, UCF & Miami would cover the entire state of Florida, and TCU, Tech, Baylor & UH covers the entire state of Texas.

Scale (Big 12) vs. Brand Size (SEC)

agree. 18 only because it matches and all three conferences could have similar set ups for conference games and access to CFP.

Personally, 16 is too many.
