I know Houston is in Year 1 of the Willie Fritz era, but they didn’t even put up a fight against UNLV. Donovan Smith completed just 50% of his passes and threw two picks while the rest of the offense ran for 38 yards on 26 carries. The defense kept the Cougars in the game for as long as they could, but the offense was pathetic.
Houston wasn’t even competitive against UNLV on Saturday. We know Willie Fritz had a big rebuild on his hands, but this team was anemic. Donovan Smith never got in a rhythm and he got no help from his offense line. Houston will get better as the season progresses, but that was as brutal a Week 1 start as any Cougars fan could have imagined.
NOBODY is expecting this year’s team to win the conference but looking competive in your debut game, which you had ALL offseason to prepare, wasn’t too much to ask
When it is all said and done, UNLV will be the 2nd, or 3rd, easiest team on our schedule and we we looked like a JV team going up against the Kansas City Chiefs.
CWF only had ONE shot to leave a First Impression…now he has to prove he has a growth plan.
That would have meant more 3 and outs and our defense being gassed. Going up tempo with would have been a disaster especially with Smith at QB.
Did you mean getting the ball out quickly on short passes like we did against Penn State with Keenum to limit their DL advantage? Also something Smith struggles with given his speed in making decisions and slow mechanics.
I can’t judge a team on week 1, basketball team went 0-2 in Big 12, and it looked like it was going to be a long season. CKS “they pee’d their leg a little bit”
I think UH severly underestimated the preparation required to get ready for an UNLV, and got shocked when they realized how physical they were
Coach admitted they were going after spring game reps, not verbatim, but close
UNLV was not the team to be still figuring out the playbook basics with. But to answer how? Not having experienced a game yet to reference prep, maybe i should have said “ill-prepared”
