Highest Preseason Ranking in modern history?

#23 is pretty damn good all things considering.

I think Fitz has the program going in the right trajectory.

I have big expectations for Weigman in his final year here.

Let’s shock the world and finish Top 10!

Not even close. CoachYeoman had a number of teams that were ranked in the top 20 in preseason, and a number in the top 10. If CWF has another great year, we’ll start being ranked in the top 20 as long as he is here…GREAT!

It’s been said here before but Fritz is our best complete coach who will stay since bill y. Fritz pays attention to all facets of the game sorta like sec teams do. Briles got us going again but he focused on offense only and wasn’t loyal. Herman did give us a e complete team in all facets but also lacked loyalty. Fritz is the closest we get to the bill y days and now we are in a p4 conference like the old Swc.

UH had something going with Jack Pardee/John Jenkins. Had the NFL not come calling in Jack’s backyard, UH could have built sometning sustainable.

We started the 1991 season under Jenkins ranked #12 i one poll.

Ended up finishing 4-7 with some embarrassing defeats.

We started the 2016 season under Herman ranked #13.

Our highest ever football pre-season ranking was #7 in 1969 under Yeoman.

Modern history, lol

no. 7? Pretty darn good. That 69 team got off to a bad start with 2 losses, then won every game the rest of the year, including a big bowl win over Auburn.

Our highest preseason ranking was #1, in 1969.

Who ranked us #1?

There’s a buzz in the late August (stifling) air, for sure

And after two opening losses and a quarterback change to Moon Mullins we reeled 9 straight wins including a 36-7 win over ranked Auburn in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
Certainly one of UH’s best teams ever

Herman didn’t give us a complete team. He was gifted many of his star players from Levine’s recruitment.

@H-Town4Ever

Do you mean ‘modern’ being as far back as something like the oldest player on the team?
I’d peg 25 years as a neat running definition of modern, and 2001 being the starting point. …but just don’t look up that season

No such thing as the “modern era”. Do you hear ESPN say it? Do the newspapers? No and No. Literally, modern era started post WW2, with helmets, uniforms and equipment that we use now. Some rules changes, but thats always the case, year to year…no such thing as modern era. Dont use it…Saying something before 2000 isnt ‘modern’ is a little silly. How about saying Current Era? That makes it right now and going back 20 or 25 years.

I’ll admit I don’t consider my self “modern” since my support for U of H football began in 1957. As far as pre-season rankings are concerned you had to have lived during the summer of 1969 when Playboy ranked us #1. So much excitement for 3 months only to be disappointed in the first game.

Sorry folks, but the highest preseason ranking UH has had is #1 in Playboy, in 1969, and #1 in Sports Illustrated, on August 26, 1991. And I have the Sports Illustrated cover to prove it.
