Honest Thoughts about the Team

It HAS to be better because our defense is worse. That is the whole discussion. How can Milos improve his offensive output for his benefit the team’s and himself to get us past some of these top tier teams.

He’s not their star… he WAS a starter last year until Awaka took his spot…

Burries, Bradley & Krivas would be their stars…

I think some fans are coping with the fact that UH isn’t arguably the best team in the nation like they have been the previous 4 seasons. UH has losses to tennessee, arizona, iowa state and tech. UH is somewhere around the 6th-10th best team in the nation. I would say their floor is losing 2nd round and ceiling is Final Four. I think UH goes out in round of 16 or 8, depending on who the matchup is.

Just because it HAS to be better doesn’t mean it would be unless we have BETTER offensive players playing more this season…

Yes, but he also isn’t a nobody. Arizona is stacked, Dell’Orso could very well be a star on a different team.

The point made was that we don’t lockdown the star players… we did except Bradley got 17…

A BENCH player beat us… period.

No, that’s not the argument. The argument is that Milos’s offensive output isn’t the same as last year and people are commenting on how it could improve to benefit the team. That’s all. Part of it, I think, is that he last lost some confidence as he defers to Kingston quite a bit. Whether that comes from the bench or is just him reacting to Kingston’s play is a mystery, but Milos is a championship level PG and he has only shown sparks of that this season.

Yes, a very, very good bench player…

Whatever the case may be, defensively we weren’t on point. Although a lot of those shots were unguardable. The kid is good.

Somebody here has access to the Evan Miys stats…

It shows that our starting line-up with both of them playing together is one of the best line-ups in the country even with Milos being down this year.

I still stand by the fact that if you take either Jojo or Sharp out of much of the game that is when we lose… that is how you beat Houston.

Nothing to do with Milos at all.

Agreed… that whole team is great… and so is HOUSTON.

It looked to me that analytics showed JoJo got into foul trouble after being on the floor past the first 3-4 minute mark which is why he was getting pulled. JMO

We aren’t a very good inside team and don’t dominate the boards as we have in the past. We were always a dynamic offensive rebounding team. Not this year. Our inside game is just weak on both sides of the board.

I agree, offensively this may be the best squad. It remains a outside shooting team.

I have wondered about the substitution pattern throughout the year. I think McCarty is very talented but the inconsistency of usage hasn’t helped him.

It’s actually fun to have a 23-4 team and still wonder why we aren’t better.

Yeah… Jojo only played 18 minutes against Zona…

Against ISU $harp played limited minutes due to fouls…

It’s been the story all season… when one of them gets in foul trouble the team is not as good.

Well, NOBODY is really AS GOOD when either of their starters gets in foul trouble.

If you meant we’re NOT GOOD when either has to sit, I would have to disagree (unless you also have another in the mix – Cenac or more likely, Flemings). We can most definitely survive ONE being in ‘trouble.’ The problem is, we usually have to contend with TWO (JoJo and Kingston), and most recently Sharp.

Top 5 man, minimum of 20 minutes played together, sorted by points per 100 possessions

Top 4 Man

Certainly when Tugler and Sharp hit the bench we are in trouble.

And in the second half we have long scoring droughts.

Vs Arizona we went 7 minutes and 39 seconds without scoring.

In his interviews Sampson admits to fouling, saying that is how it goes with tough defense. So literally Sharp fouls by design since he guards the leading scorer of our foe.

Az went to FT line 31 times. Hard to win with that stat.

Some of the FT number is inflated by our late game attempted comeback. The FT figure was pretty even with ours before that.

Why are people not talking about THIS?! Regardless of everything else, why is Milos’ game/decision making not the same as last year? He’s a completely different player, if you ask me. He has never been great around the rim, but his floater has disappeared. How can anyone let this happen? The times he gets into the paint successfully, he just pulls the ball back out… This, after dribbling the ball endlessly. Physically and mentally, he’s just not the same guy. This team won’t be able to do what it wants to do without a reemergence of Milos Uzan. Early on, we knew this team would struggle scoring at the rim, with the departure of Roberts… What we shouldn’t have expected was for Milos being a shell of himself. I am rooting for the guy…We are going to need him!

Sharp doesn’t foul by design…

Otherwise CKS wouldn’t sit him for the rest of the half or until there are 3 minutes left in the 2nd half.

Sharp has to be smart enough to know he can play uber aggressive with no fouls in the first but then has to avoid dumb fouls after he picks one up and that sometimes it’s better to let someoneget a contested shot up instead of picking up a blocking foul on a drive…

There was a lot of discussion during the off-season about the depth of this team. While we’ve seen few flashes of good play from the bench players, there isn’t a single player coming off the bench that will give you a performance like the one we saw from Dell’Orso. Not one. All have showed flashes but none are consist or dominant. On the other hand, Arizona basically
had starter in Dell’Orso coming off the bench.

I think that’s recency bias… Dell’Orso is currently on a heater… look at his games prior to the last 2… not very good.

2nd & 3rd stat columns are FGM/FGA
