Houston Astros Baseball & MLB Discussions

Ummm…I wouldn’t say that necessarily…even if they keep Bregman, they still need a 1B…plus, the top guys they are targetting in these deals appear to be pitchers and outfielders…they’re still very much in on Bregman…will probably have to up the offer, but if Bregman was truly coveted at the 200 million, he’d already be gone to someone…just something to consider

So, if we do trade Tucker (assuming we get a haul) and lose Bregman, what kind of a hit, if any, do our 2025 chances take? Asking those on here who are a lot smarter than I am.

eh…you could do a lot worse than Castellanos, especially if it means you’re also getting Bohm and Crawford. Plus, you need a guy to play OF after losing Tucker (he’s also been pretty durable for the bulk of his career). Now, the Phils would still have to kick in some salary, but Dombrowski may bite on that

Tough to say……really depends on what comes back our way….

Most likely take a hit this year but then if we get the right guys back and a couple of our young guys ( Matthews , Dezenzo, etc. hit) then we have kept the “window” open for several more years.

The good news is we have an owner that is willing to keep us at the top echelon in the league……and a GM that is known for growing the farm….

I’m okay with a down year to replenish and get some dead money off the books.

I know they’re “in” on Bregman, but it remains to be seen if Bregman is in on the Astros. He would have to take a lower payday to stay.

We’ll see.

I have always felt there are stats guys and wins guy and WAR doesn’t truly reflect the difference.

Tucker to me has always been a stats guy. I don’t hate him but he never shows in the playoffs. He is Mr. June.

I wouldn’t give Bregman anymore than what they are offering. His arm issues should worry everyone.

Make no mistake, Bregman’s first choice would be to remain with the Astros. So, yes he is IN on them (go ask his wife, and she would concur as well). But he’s not gonna undersell himself on the way to doing it.

So, I would think if he gets a 200-210 offer from someone, Bregs is gonna go back to the Astros and give them the opportunity to match or come close. And because I don’t think the Astros are idiots (and would have to know the initial offer was a low-ball figure), they would be prepared to have some sort of increased number ready to go if needed.

Jay, you think Bregman’s first choice is to stay in Houston?

I’m not doubting you, just never really got that vibe from….i have always felt that he was itching to split….
When Altuve made his pitch after the season ended I wondered how AB felt about that….

Has his wife said publicly that she would like to stay in Houston?

If a guy who’s already a multi-millionaire is willing to uproot his family and move elsewhere for a ~10% greater payday (the Astros have reportedly offered ~$186MM), then that’s not really being “in” on staying.

Just saying “you have an opportunity to match” doesn’t really change that.

If the Astros are his “first choice,” then he has all the power to make that happen. If he goes elsewhere, it’s because the Astros weren’t his first choice.

Alex Bregman’s Wife Could Have Impact on Potential Houston Astros Reunion

I hope it works out that way and his objective is to maximize his deal with the Astros rather than chase a contract elsewhere.

But the Astros aren’t going over $200MM (or at least they shouldn’t).

well, without really knowing for sure about the details of the reported increased offer or results of the proposed scenario, there’s really no way to say or gauge who’s ‘more’ committed one way or the other.

But in my opinion, if the Astros are able to match the best offer he gets, he’s staying, no question. That would be my prediction.

But they aren’t going to do that if the reported numbers are accurate. So if he’s requiring the Astros to match, then he’s deciding to go elsewhere.

Staying here will almost certainly mean that he’s taking less than he could get somewhere else.

I don’t even care who’s committed or not - I just don’t want to hear Bregman say he “really wanted to stay” but had to leave for 10% more “for his family” (or whatever). If he wants to be an Astro, then he’ll be an Astro - it’s 100% on him.

Okay…I think we’re overthinking this.

Let me try and simplify and clarify: ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL, remaining with the Astros would be his first choice, in my opinion.

This, 100%. His family will be just fine whether the contract is for $186M or $210M. It is all on him.

Great post.

'Stros # 20.

The Cubs are supposedly offering a pretty attractive trade package, though there’s nothing concrete.

With all of the potential Tucker trade talk floating around, it’s becoming hard to envision him in an Astros uniform next year.

It certainly seems like there’s a lot we’re hearing re: Tucker…Framber, not so much. If Framber is here, I really like our starting rotation. Even if he’s not, I still like our rotation.

If we do trade Tucker and lose Bregman, I hope we find some workable replacements…we’ve been pretty spoiled since ‘17, so the thought of a rebuild depresses me a bit.

Agreed.

I don’t know what the state tax looks like where these other teams that want him….but Texas has the advantage there with most.

IMO if anyone of us who post here had say 186M offer to play/work where we called home or move to another state for 200M….i think
Most of us would stay home where our family wanted to be….especially if my wife wanted to stay….

He has grossed over 100M already….that “extra” 14M is not worth uprooting my family.

I don’t know……maybe I’m
Wrong.
