Houston Astros Baseball & MLB Discussions

50% of total revenue for talent seems inline with other professional services industries (e.g. consulting, accounting, legal). Also, MLB teams don’t typically have super high profit margins.

The real value to owners (other than ego and a play toy) has been franchise appreciation.

Why? You lose Bregman and replace with Paredes. You lost Tucker (who we didn’t have much of the season anyways) and you replace with Santander.

Christian Walker is a clear upgrade over what we had at 1B last year.

It was a joke Jo……you gotta start reading further up the thread.

With how budget conscious that they are, my guess is that they go for a Jesse Winker or Alex Verdugo type. They tried to get Joc Pederson, who went to the Rangers.

I would sign Teoscar or Santander….go over the luxury tax again this year……but then a bunch of dead money comes off the books for next season….

Plus , you’ll have a better idea what you have with Melton, Matthews, Sims, etc.

If any of those guys really blossom then you could always trade one of the guys you sign this year.

Of course it’s not my money….lol

Joprior reminds me of Shaq. Just a scant year ago Jo was on the top of his game. Doling out intel and shaming the ill-mannered non believers.

Now he’s a working stiff, showing his pessimistic side and complaining about posts.

I welcome him back but there sure is a void to fill.

Haha. This is my bad.

See it now. lol

I 1000% agree with you, Pollard. But that’s nothing new. We’re baseball savants. Haha

Sewing Blogs are getting in on the Astros trade action. Cool.

No way we go into the season without adding an outfielder.

Damn, Dodgers got Teoscar for 22M per at 3 years….i would have done that deal….

IMO the Astros have made the moves they need to make the playoffs and likely win the division.

But I feel like we need ONE outfielder to really give us a chance at a World Series….

We can’t have a 6 deep lineup and win the World Series.

I think a lot of things have to break right for them to win the division without making any additional moves.

The offensive holes in the OF will impact the whole lineup UNLESS Chas gets back to where he was a couple of years ago or Jake performs like the management seems to think he will. I know there are some rookies with upside, but that’s an even bigger unknown than McMeyers.

Peña needs to take a step forward, and the new guys obviously have to produce. I can see how the offense might could better, but it’s not hard to imagine us being worse.

I’d feel better about the rotation if Verlander was in the fold, assuming there aren’t any other moves forthcoming.

Even as constructed I see us winning the division….partly because I don’t think the others have done enough to be a favorite….i think the pitching takes a step forward….
Maybe it’s just me but I have not seen much in the way of giving credit to/expecting even more improvement from Hunter and Spencer.

Remember, last year we got nothing from Tucker for 3+ months and were able to win enough with a patchwork OF.

Crane likes to win….i think he also knows he can’t pull the wool over ( most) Astros fans….

Is it possible they roll like this until the deadline? I guess….or maybe they think they have seen enough of Melton to think he can contribute more than Chas and Jake everyday….

Lot more to say but I’m about to check out for the night.

I fully expect to have a great starting 4. I just don’t think that’s going to be enough.

I’m just not sold on Paredes, I guess.

My wild card is the clubhouse. Bregman is such a big piece and is the last of the true vocal leaders in that clubhouse. Altuve seems like he is quiet and moreso leads by example. (which is fine) I hope that Pena and Yordan can really take ownership of the team. Maybe Walker can be that too. Especially since I’m not fully confident in Espada’s leadership style just yet.

Walker will be a leader because that’s his natural personality. He likes talking to younger players. I’m more concerned with RBI’s.

I’m losing faith in Peña. Have none in McMeyers. I think Yainer becomes an All Star this season. Worried about Paredes. Worried about the pen. Worried about the outfield.

So…the DBacks are getting Corbin Burnes for 6 years and 210 million…this basically shows Boras has way overplayed his hand regarding Bregman. He’s certainly not gonna get his 200 million now, IMO.

The Astros’ offer was apparently not only fair, but probably quite accurate.

We’ll see, but this is starting to look like a trend with Boras. This is still on Bregman - if he wanted to stay, then he’d be signed already.

Boras goes into every negotiation thinking he’s won already. It’s an impressive mindset…until it doesn’t work.
